Santa Clara University OCSP students participate in special advising sessions. As SCU Freshmen, OCSP students meet three times a quarter with the OCSP Director. All other students meet once a quarter with the OCSP Director. All students warranting special attention are required to meet on an as-needed basis.

Academic and Career Plans

Advising sessions allow students to discuss their goals with the OCSP Director and plan for their future. Advising session discussions include:

course schedule planning

choosing a minor

student work goals

school-year internships

summer internships

Student plans are documented and reviewed annually.

Course Progress

Grade check forms are distributed to the professors of OCSP Freshmen three times per quarter. This allows us to gauge their academic progress. All students warranting special attention may also request grade check forms sent to their professors.

Advising Philosphy

The advising sessions afford Santa Clara University OCSP students the opportunity to share their issues and problems with the OCSP Director. Students are always directed to solve their personal crises with minimal assistance of the OCSP and maximal assistance from the third party (roommate, professor, department, etc.) in question.  For example, students needing help with a class assignment are first directed to their professor. If necessary, students are asked to place a phone call to their professor in the middle of the advising session. Self-reliance is stressed and OCSP intervenes only when requested by the student. Students are taught to stand up for themselves and see their own problems to their conclusion.
