Ulistac Natural Area is a community-driven venture, which means the
project flourishes only because volunteers have logged thousands of
hours working on the project. There are countless ways to get involved
in the Ulistac Restoration Project. If you don’t find the kind
of opportunity you’re looking for in the list below, please
contact our Outreach Center.

Board of Directors
The UNA-REP Board of Directors is a group of community volunteers
who have committed to take the lead in strategic planning and
fundraising for UNA-REP. During
the past several years, with the support and participation of
community members, local government and nearby corporations, we have
accomplished many exciting things in and around Ulistac. We have
established a regular restoration schedule, created the annual
Wildflower Walk, and founded a dynamic field trip program. We
are well on the road to our vision of Ulistac functioning an
outstanding educational resource for children, teachers, and
families. which will provide consistent, innovative leadership and
direction for UNA-REP programs.
The Board of Directors currently consists of 5
members: a President, a Vice-President, a liaison to the Technical
Oversight Committee, an Education/Outreach Chairperson and a
Research/Restoration Chairperson. There are still seats open
on the Board.
Participation in the leadership of UNA-REP is fun
and exciting, particularly for those who would like to help provide
consistent, innovative leadership and direction for UNA-REP
programs. However, being on the Board does come with a few
responsibilities.
Board members are expected to attend regular
meetings (held quarterly or every other month, as needed), and those
who are nominated and elected will be asked to serve for 18
months. Board members are expected to participate in fundraising,
and are encouraged to be regularly involved with one of our
volunteer programs.
Position descriptions, which outline the useful
skills and responsibilities related to each seat on the board, are
available here.
Perhaps you would be a tremendous asset to UNA-REP
as a member of the Board of Directors, have an interest in strategic
planning and fundraising, and would be willing to serve on the board
for the next 18 months. If that sounds like you, please send
a letter expressing the reasons for your interest and a paragraph
briefly outlining your background to the
Outreach Center. If possible, please also attach your
resume. We will contact you regarding an interview.
Restoration
Work Days
Join us for watering, weeding, mulching, and planting hundreds
of oaks and native plants! Regularly scheduled work days are on
the 1st Saturday and 3rd Sunday of every month. Please see the Work
Day Schedule for times and reminders about what to bring/wear.
No experience necessary to volunteer on restoration work days!
We also schedule special volunteer events for corporations, classes,
and other groups. Both weekday and weekend times are available.
Please contact our Outreach
Coordinator for more information.
Field Trips
Field trip leaders wanted! If you want to help interpret the natural
and/or cultural history of Ulistac to elementary and middle school
students, this is the job for you! Field trip times will vary, as
some classes will come in the morning, and some will come in the
afternoons. When they arrive at Ulistac, classes will be divided
into small groups (ideally, 5-6 students), each with a field trip
leader. To find out more about the field trip experiences we offer,
please look at the Field Trips page.
We ask all Field Trip Leaders to complete a short training session.
Once you have completed Field Trip Leader Training, you will be
added to the list of individuals our office contacts when a teacher
requests a field trip. You can accept or decline the opportunities
as they become available, and as the field trips fit your schedule.
Please contact the Outreach
Coordinator to find out when the next Field Trip Leader Training
will be held. High school students are invited to participate in
leading field trips.
Teachers: If you are interested in bringing your classes to Ulistac
Natural Area, look at our Field Trips page and contact our
Outreach Coordinator to find out about available dates and the
possibility of free transportation to the Natural Area.
Docents
We are currently seeking individuals who are interested in giving
tours of Ulistac to the public. Please contact our Outreach
Coordinator to find out when the next Docent Training will
be held.
Internships
We are currently offering internship opportunities to high school
and college students. Internship projects vary depending on
the needs of our office and the interests of the applicant.
All interns must be motivated, independent workers.
Please send a cover letter and resume to the
Outreach Center. Be sure to explain your interest in UNA-REP,
and what sort of project you would like to work on. Be sure to
include: the number of hours you are willing to work each week,
whether you have your own transportation, and any special skills you
think may be useful. Unfortunately, at the present time, all
of our internships are unpaid.
Special
Projects
Please contact our Outreach Coordinator if you can help
with any of the following projects! Many of these are prefect opportunities
for high school students who need to complete community service
hours.
Eagle Scout Candidates: You are encouraged to
use this list as a starting point for designing your projects. However,
please contact the Outreach Center immediately if you are considering
doing your project at Ulistac Natural Area. Because the Ulistac
Technical Oversight Committee must approve all Eagle Scout projects, it is
a good idea to consult with our office as early as possible in the
planning process.
Ulistac Bird ID Guide: Using the list of commonly
seen birds of Ulistac, create a laminated card with photos and names
of birds.
Updating the Plant ID Guide: Using our recently updated
list of native plants in the Bird & Butterfly Garden, put together
photos and brief descriptions of the plants not already in the
guide.
Promotional Video: Volunteers with experience
in communications and film are needed to write, film and edit a
3-5 minute promotional video that introduces Ulistac Natural Area
and the Restoration Project to a general audience. The video could
potentially run on Santa Clara Municipal TV, Santa Clara University
Campus TV, this website, and more.
Data Entry: Volunteers needed to help track volunteer
hours by entering restoration day information into Excel. If
volunteers have experience with ACCESS, they may be able to design
an appropriate database to track other aspects of the restoration project.
“Official Photographer”: We would love to have someone with a digital camera
and some photographic skills to come to Ulistac events and capture
the wildlife in action, not to mention all the visible progress
we’re making in restoration.
Anything else?: If you have a project in mind,
and don’t see it listed here, please feel free to call the
Outreach Center.
Every contribution to the Ulistac Restoration Project is valuable.
If you have time to even help us just get started on one of these
projects, let us know! Many thanks, in advance, for your generosity!
