Aging and the Counselor Course number: CPSY x 858 A/B There is no one to one relationship between age and some of its negative outcomes: dementia, depression and chronic illness. It is the counselor who focuses on the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that mediate the aging process and influence its outcome. This course is designed to alert the counselor to the signs and symptoms of mental disorders as well as the thought and behaviors associated with successful and unsuccessful aging. This class will explore stressors consistent with aging and their possible outcomes. We are particularly interested in those outcomes that affect the mental health. We will consider any age issues that might affect how we interview, assess, and develop treatment plans. We will also explore some of the assumed difficulties of aging and determine if they are inevitable of amendable to the counseling process. Instructor: Barry Hayes, Ph.D. CPSY x 858 A Saturday, October 14, 2006 OR CPSY x 858 B |
