In Fall 1995, the first phase of LINC-TV - Santa Clara University's
privately owned cable television system - was completed with
cable television service to all of the residence halls. The
cable headend is located in Media Services, in the Ricard
Observatory. The cable system receives signal from two sources
- antennas located on the roof of Swig receive local programming
(network affiliates and independent stations), and the three
satellite dishes located at the south end of the Observatory
receive the premium channels (including ESPN, MTV, SCOLA,
C-Span). Signal is transmitted to the residence halls in three
ways: via coax to the Kennedy Mall halls; via fiber to Graham
100, and then coax to the east-side halls; and via a single
hop microwave antennae to both the Villa and the Alameda halls.
While LINC-TV is currently limited to just a few sites outside
of the residence halls, plans have been made to expand LINC-TV
to all offices and classrooms over the next few years. In
addition to the residence halls, LINC-TV now goes to the Varsi
Media Lab, Benson Center, 1st floor Bannan Hall classrooms,
and a few Engineering and Kenna classrooms.
In addition to the off-campus programming on LINC-TV, there
are a number of channels set aside for original programming.
Text messages are run on the Housing and Residence Life channel
or the Events Channel, and there are other channels available
for taped programming (e.g., course materials, tape delayed
live campus events, event promos, training videos). If you
are interested in using LINC-TV to deliver video programming
or for text messages, call Nancy Cutler, x4915, or ncutler@scu.edu.
