Prof. Robert Bozina

Santa Clara University Professor Robert Bozina, B.A., M.A. studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Santa Clara University, and San Francisco State University. His most recent recording is an album of original works for the Terra Nova label: "Ballads, Cantos, Canciones: Music for Voice and Classical Guitar by Robert Bozina" (TNM 619). The Guitar Foundation of America states his published works for voice and classical guitar constitute "a significan contribution to the literature."

Within the Performance Studies wing in the Center of Performing Arts at Santa Clara University, Robert Bozina teaches courses in ethnomusicology, classical guitar, history, and regional worl music surveys. Editorial activity includes textbooks on topics ranging from music theory and musicianship to the history of Rock and Roll and World Music ("Musics of the World's Cultures, A Source book for Music Educators, Lundquist & Szego, Reading, UK. 1999)

Professor Bozina left a long time appointment at the University of California, Santa Cruz, to accept his position at Santa Clara. Though principally trained as a classical guitarist with additional degrees in Humanities and Philosophy, he plays a variety of Cuban instruments, most notably Cuban Tres. He continues active research in the Republic of Cuba and collaborates with Cuban faculty to develop and sustain "La Musica y Cultura Cubana", a summer course offered annually by Santa Clara University International Programs

Working from research, he founded Son Santa Clara--a student/faculty group dedicated exclusively to the performance of music representing Cuba's eastern provinces. Prior to Son Santa Clara, Robert Bozina directed The Saint Clare Ensemble: a professional multicultural group performing Sones Cubanos; Nueva Cancion; Blues; Norteno and teh full range of classical guitar repertory. Robert Bozina is faculty sponsor of the Santa Clara University Sailing Team.
