Japanese American Internment
Online Exhibit

Introduction to the Exhibit

Instructions for Evacuation

Civilian Exclusion Orders, similar to this one, were posted in areas that were to be evacuated. They notified the people on what they were allowed to bring with them, but offered no information on where they were to be taken.

Map of the Evacuation Area

The shaded area of this map shows the areas from which Japanese Americans were evacuated. The western portions of California, Oregon, Washington and Arizona became known as Military Area no. 1; and the eastern portions of these states became Military Area no. 2. All Japanese Americans from Military Area no. 1, as well as the California portion of Military Area no. 2 were evacuated.

The Assembly Centers: Temporary Internment Camps

Workers prepare the horse stables at Santa Anita Racetrack for the arrival of interned Japanese Americans. They would live in these stables until permanent camps were built.
