Created in 1930, the national Japanese American Citizens League presently has 112 chapters including the West Valley Chapter. This organization is non-profit and focuses on education, and human and civil rights.

Overall the Japanese American Citizens League's goals are:

Protection of the civil and human rights of Japanese Americans, as well as securing rights for all people

Preserving the Japanese American culture and values

Participating in the increase in understanding between social and ethnic groups

Promoting and sponsoring activities which encourage members to perform their obligations and duties to America

The Japanese Citizens League also provides scholarships for outstanding students and artists, as well as legal and litigation assistance for cases involving discrimination.

The West Valley Chapter of the J.A.C.L. was started in 1970 and is made up of three groups: the main J.A.C.L. group; the Next Generation, a group for sansei and yonsei (third and fourth generation Japanese Americans); and the Senior Club. They also sponsor the annual fundraising Daruma Festival as an annual fundraiser.
