The Japan Society of Northern California began in 1905 with the
primary goal of greeting delegates from Japan who would arrive in
San Francisco, the west coast destination of the transcontinental
railroad. After being disbanded because of World War II, the group
reorganized as a non-profit educational organization. Today it
continues to fulfill its goals to promoting a better understanding
and stronger ties between the United States and Japan.

Today the organization is a fully independent organization with more
than 3000 members, which include both individuals and corporate
representatives. The Japan Society sponsors a number of different
events and programs to fulfill their goal to promote better
understanding between the Japanese and American cultures. A major
program lead by the Japan Society is a number of forums for industry
and government representatives in which they are invited to join in
business luncheons and seminars. The Japan Society of Northern
California also sponsors cultural activities, such as Japanese language
classes, performing arts and lecture programs.

The Japan Society of Northern California is the second largest
Japan-related educational organization in the United States.
