In 1909 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People grew out of the original NAACP and the Niagara Movement which both had visions of improving the quality of life for African Americans. With various movements, programs and their newspaper "The Crisis," The NAACP continues to benefit the African American people. Today the organization has over 500,000 members, 1,700 branch chapters and 450 college and youth chapters.
The San Jose Chapter of the NAACP is the largest branch in the western region. They have taken on a number of leadership roles in the community such as monitoring the San Jose Police Curfew program and pursuing legal redress. Many of the members have also been working with other organizations to benefit the community. They have participated in the Juneteenth Festival, and are planning an uncoming gang summit, as well as their own branch web page.
