The Plumed Serpent is an important representation of Quetzalcoatl, a mythological figure of the Mesoamerican pantheon. Depictions of Quetzalcoatl as a plumed serpent are found in Mesoamerica from the beginning of the Olmec period (about 1200 BC), through the arrival of Hernan Cortes and Spanish conquistadors and into the modern period.
When portrayed as a plumed serpent, Quetzal, symbolizes the blending of heaven and earth. Quetzalcoatl is also associated with many other things, such as: the planet Venus, the wind and breath of life, the discovery of corn, the invention of writing the arts, birth and renewal. For these reasons, this statue continues to be a source of self-identifying for the Mexican community of the Santa Clara valley.
