GBP STUDENT NETWORKS
The purpose of Santa Clara University Graduate Business Networks is:
- To promote, coordinate, and implement student activities
- To strengthen channels of communication among students, faculty, and administration of the Leavey School of Business, the University community, and the Bay Area business community
- To enrich the curricular and extracurricular aspects of student life in the Graduate Business Programs
The GBP Student Networks accomplish this by offering graduate business students a variety of opportunities to network with each other, with industry through panels and presentations, and with alumni. The networks are created by students, with the guidance, support, and direction of the GBP Student Life staff. Networks are open to all graduate business students
The GBP Student Life staff advises and provides support for the networks regarding programming, community service, mentoring, and other outreach activities. GBP Student Networks take leadership roles in quarterly orientation sessions, hallway networking between classes, Network Nights, End-of-Quarter parties, and annual INC (Inter-Network Council) events, as well as many special events throughout the year

MBA ORIENTATION PROGRAM
MBA orientation consists of an evening and/or Saturday sessions required for all entering students. Students beginning the program in fall 2006 attend orientation sessions in August. Students entering in winter 2007 and spring 2007 attend orientation sessions in March. Once students have submitted their deposit, they are contacted by e-mail with information and specific dates for these required events
New MBA students participate in orientation sessions designed to prepare them for the MBA program. In addition to meeting faculty and fellow students, new MBA candidates will have the opportunity to learn about academic and co-curricular activities within the School of Business. New students are invited to network with current students and alumni who can share their experiences while in the program and after graduation
Orientation will provide a foundation for MGMT 501, the required Managerial Competencies and Team Effectiveness course, by enhancing appreciation for and development of skills in teamwork and leadership, thus building a sense of esprit de corps among entering students
Orientation acquaints and sensitizes students to the overall structure of the MBA curriculum and its rigors and demands, and provides an overview of general administrative procedures for the MBA program
LEAVEY LECTURES
Each quarter of the academic year begins with a special Leavey Lecture. All MBA/MSIS students are invited, and classes are rescheduled to facilitate attendance. At the fall lecture, which is followed by an open-air reception, the dean welcomes students and addresses important issues confronting the business school and the environment in which it operates. In winter quarter, the school invites a distinguished practitioner or scholar to address students on a topic of current interest. The altered class schedule for Leavey Lecture nights is:
5:30 Class meets from 5:30-6:20 p.m
6:30 Leavey Lecture
7:05 Class meets from 8:00-8:50 p.m
8:30 Class meets from 9:00-9:50 p.m
Recent Leavey Lecturers have included Scott Adams (Dilbert creator); Jay Conger (director, Leadership Institute, USC); Jeanette Garretty (senior economist and director, Bank of America); John Harsanyi, Ph.D. (Nobel Prize winner in economics); Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kanter (Harvard University); Michael Malone (retired editor, Forbes ASAP); Ko Nishimura (retired president and CEO, Solectron Corp.); Hatim Tyabji (president, Saraide); Les Vadasz (executive vice president, Intel Corp.); and Hersh Shefrin and Meir Statman from the Finance Department faculty
Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC)
The Leavey School of Business Graduate Business Programs (GBP) Office and the Inter-Network Council (INC) have collaborated to create the GBP Student Advisory Council (GSAC)
GSAC serves as a conduit between graduate business students and GBP administration, enabling students to play a key role in shaping the strategic direction and resource allocation of the GBP office. The GSAC provides a forum by which GBP administration and students communicate on an ongoing basis regarding service improvements.
Charter
Our charter is to provide a regular dialog between a council of student leaders and the GBP administrative staff. We will prioritize student issues and pursue those ideas that will create the most positive impact for our current students in the areas that we can affect.
