FacilitiesA $3.7 million modernization of Santa Clara's chemistry building was completed in Fall 1994, creating a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility. Inside the building, 80 percent of the space was reconstructed, making room for five teaching laboratories that accommodate up to 25 students at a time, as well as faculty offices, nine faculty/student research laboratories, several instrument rooms, computer laboratories, and classrooms. We also have a teaching lab and 3 faculty labs and offices in the new addition of the Alumni Science building completed Fall 1999. The new laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art ventilation systems and fume hoods, and all lab benches are wired to accommodate computer networking. With the help of recent foundation grants, an excellent array of major instruments has been assembled for student and faculty use. Among these are a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer; x-ray diffractometer, three Fourier transform infrared spectrometers; several computer-interfaced, ultraviolet-visible spectrometers, and a refrigerated centrifuge and a liquid scintillation counter. In addition, modern gas and liquid chromatography, electrochemical, and thermoanalysis equipment are available. Undergraduate students use these and other instruments in their course work and independent research projects. Students also have access to several computer labs with more than 30 Pentium PCs. Instruction in computer applications begins in the freshman course sequence and continues through the four-year program.
