AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

Graduate Business Programs (GBP) offers different awards and recognition to students for outstanding academic achievement.

Beta Gamma Sigma
Beta Gamma Sigma is the National Honor Society for business students. Election to membership is the highest scholastic honor a business student can achieve and is limited to outstanding men and women students who give promise of success in the field of business and who rank in the top 20 percent of MBA graduates.

Belotti Awards
These three awards are given to graduate business students and are endowed by the Mario Belotti Scholarship Fund.

The Off to a Great Start award recognizes the two top students in each section of ACTG 300 and MGMT 501, the first classes students take in the program. These recipients are selected by faculty.

The Turning the Corner award recognizes all students who reach 36 units and have a GPA of 3.9 or above.

The Home Stretch award honors the top capstone group in each section of the MGMT 619 class, which students take in their last quarter of the program. The recipients of this award are selected by their capstone professors.

Dean’s List
The Dean’s List honors all students who receive a term GPA of 3.8 or higher. Students are recognized on a quarterly basis.

GBP STUDENT NETWORKS

The purpose of Santa Clara University Graduate Business Networks is:

  • To promote, coordinate, and implement student activities
  • To strengthen channels of communication among students, faculty, and administration of the Leavey School of Business, the University community, and the Bay Area business community
  • To enrich the curricular and extracurricular aspects of student life in the Graduate Business Programs.

GBP Student Networks accomplish this by offering graduate business students a variety of opportunities to network with each other, with industry through panels and presentations, and with alumni. The networks are created by students, with the guidance, support, and direction of the GBP Student Life staff. Networks are open to all graduate business students and alumni.

GBP Student Life staff advise and provide support for the networks regarding programming, community service, mentoring, and other outreach activities. GBP Student Networks take leadership roles in quarterly orientation sessions, hallway networking between classes, Network Nights, End-of-Quarter parties, and annual Inter-Network Council (INC) events, as well as many special events throughout the year.

Current active networks include:

  • Consulting Club
  • Entrepreneurs Connection
  • Finance Connexion
  • Information Systems Connexion
  • International Business Network
  • Marketing Network
  • Net Impact
  • Networking Athletic Connection
  • Real Estate Network
  • Toastmasters’ Network
  • Women in Business

All graduate business students are encouraged to join at least one network, or start one of their own, in order to maximize their experience at Santa Clara University. NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM

New Student Orientation consists of a Saturday session required for all entering students. Students beginning the program in fall 2008 attend the orientation session in August. Students entering in spring 2009 attend the orientation session in March. Once students have submitted their deposits, they are contacted by e-mail with information and specific dates for these mandatory events.

New MBA/MSIS students participate in orientation sessions designed to prepare them for the graduate program. In addition to meeting faculty and fellow students, new MBA/MSIS candidates have the opportunity to learn about academic and co-curricular activities within the School of Business. New students are invited to network with current students and alumni who can share their experiences while in the program and after graduation.

Orientation will provide a foundation for MGMT 501, the required Managerial Competencies and Team Effectiveness course, by enhancing appreciation for and development of skills in teamwork and leadership, thus building a sense of esprit de corps among entering students.

Orientation acquaints and sensitizes students to the overall structure of the MBA/MSIS curricula and its rigors and demands. It also provides an overview of general administrative procedures for the MBA/MSIS program.

QUARTER START EVENTS

Each quarter of the academic year begins with a special event to kick-off the quarter. All MBA/MSIS students are required to attend, and classes are rescheduled to facilitate attendance. In the fall quarter, the Graduate Business Programs Office hosts Back-to-School Nights where the dean welcomes students and addresses important issues confronting the business school and the environment in which it operates. This is followed by an opportunity to speak with concentration advisors, student network representatives, the Graduate Student Representative Board, and other departments from the campus. In winter and spring quarters, the dean invites a distinguished practitioner or scholar to address students on a topic of current interest. The altered class schedule for these nights is:

5:45 Class meets from 5:45-6:55 p.m.
7:00 Quarter Kick-Off Event
7:20 Class meets from 8:30-9:40 p.m.

Recent Leavey Lecturers have included Scott Adams (Dilbert creator); Jay Conger (director, Leadership Institute, USC); Jeanette Garretty (senior economist and director, Bank of America); Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kanter (Harvard University); Michael Malone (retired editor, Forbes ASAP); Ko Nishimura (retired president and CEO, Solectron Corp.); Hatim Tyabji (president, Saraide); Les Vadasz (executive vice president, Intel Corp); Mark Thompson (Author of Success Built to Last); Scott Kriens (CEO, Juniper Networks); and Jen-Hseih Huang (Co-founder and CEO, NVIDIA).

GRADUATE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE BOARD (GSRB)

The Graduate Student Representative Board (GSRB) serves as a conduit between graduate business students and the GBP administration, enabling students to play a key role in shaping the strategic direction and resource allocation of the GBP administration. The GSRB provides a forum by which GBP administration and students communicate on an ongoing basis regarding service initiatives and improvements.

Charter
Our charter is to provide a regular dialog between a council of student leaders and the GBP administrative staff. We prioritize student issues and pursue those ideas that will create the most positive impact for our current students in the areas that we can effect.
