How and why did you first get involved with your service?

I got involved my freshman year, fall 2011. I am a first generation college student and a LEAD Scholar. My LEAD mentor was the director of curriculum and she got me interested in the program. I realized quickly how much of a difference I could make in this program. I enjoyed working with the students and by the end of my freshman year I became the director of mentor relations. By the end of my sophomore year, I became chapter director.

How do you feel you have empowered others to become more through your service?

Through my service I believe I have directly empowered my mentees to "become more." My favorite part of the mentoring sessions happens when a student realizes that he or she can actually go to college. It may take one session or ten. No matter how long, I am committed to making sure that each student understands that college is a possibility. Without fail it always happens. That is why keeping mentoring.

How has this influenced what you want to do next?

I know that I am deeply committed to increasing the possibilities or a better education for everyone. Working with Strive has shown me how much a difference a person can make by just letting another person know that they can do anything. I want to continue to inspire others to "become more" after I graduate. I want to work with other countries to develop their education systems and reach more students.

What are your future plans?

I want to work in US foreign policy and international relations. I want to work with foreign governments to develop their education systems. A cornerstone of democracy is proper, mass education. Education is critical in creating a stable international community. I want to play a role in this vision of a better world.

If you could give a student advice on how to become more at SCU, what would it be?

Be open. A lot of opportunities are going to come to you your freshman year. Be open to grabbing a hold of them and ride them wherever they take you. At the same time try something new. You may find that you have a passion for something you had never considered before. Ultimately, you cannot become more if you do not try more.
