Department of Motor Vehicles
| It is currently a common misconception that you need a Social Security Number in order to obtain a driver's license. The Social Security Administration (SSA) stated on March 1st, 2002, that they would no longer assign Social Security Numbers when the sole reason for needing an SSN is to comply with a State statute that requires a SSN for issuance of a driver's license. Therefore, in order for you to comply with the Department of Motor Vehicle's (DMV) "old requirement" of obtaining a Social Security Number, you will need to take your DMV receipt (after taking the written exam) to SSA so that they may assist you with Form 3288. The DMV Form 3288 will allow the SSA to release (and verify) certain information for the DMV, so that you may return to the DMV to take the driving exam and be issued a temporary driver's license.
