I grew up in Buffalo, NY (Go Bills!), half-Indian, half-Irish, an only child.  In high school I excelled in math and physics, so I headed to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for Industrial Engineering.  I didn’t want to be an engineer, so it was hard for me to do well, but I played lacrosse and found being a student-athlete really got me through.  After three years, I transferred out, to St. Bonaventure University.  My bachelor’s degree is in Political Science/Pre-Law with a concentration in Philosophy/Ethics.  I minored in French, Classics, and math.

Have I gone into a career in any of those?  No.
Do I use what I learned in those classes every day?  Yes. Absolutely.

I advocate studying varied fields, then focusing in graduate school.  My master’s degree is in Higher Education Administration with a Student Affairs concentration.  My doctoral degree is also in Higher Education Administration, specializing in curriculum design, assessment of learning, and minority/international student education.  Through those 5 years at the University at Buffalo, I taught first-year math and writing, and Asian Studies.  In 2006, I moved to San Jose and got this dream job at SCU.

Outside of work, I’m a competitive sailor, work catering on weekends, and read literature by Asian American women.  I kayak and mountain bike, so NorCal is perfect for me.  My strength comes from helping things grow (people, gardens, non-profit orgs, fundraisers, theatre/cultural arts).

Greetings, and let me take a second to share a little bit about me.  I'm a Pacific Northwesterner born and raised.  I grew up in Vancouver, Washington, just across the river from Portland, Oregon.  I attended the University of Oregon where I received my undergraduate degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations in 1999, and then completed my master's in Higher Education Administration in 2002.  I've worked in a variety of positions both in and out of higher education over the past ten years.  I've worked at three other Universities (the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and San Jose State University) prior to coming here to Santa Clara.  Among my positions, I've worked in academic advising, admissions, and career services, so I think I have a pretty good understanding of many of the issues facing students, and hope that I can be of help to those of you here at Santa Clara.  I'm also working with an exciting new piece of the SCU Academic Core; Pathways, and I look forward to helping all of you navigate through them during your time here on campus.  When I'm not at work, I enjoy lots of things including spending time with friends and family, watching sports (especially my Ducks!), running, rafting, hanging out with my dog, or just enjoying a good cup of coffee.

As for a little background information about me, I’m originally from Baltimore, Maryland (go Orioles & Ravens!), but my family is originally from Hawaii.  I came out to Southern California in the summer of 1995, where I attended Whittier College for my undergraduate education.  I graduated from Whittier in 1999 with a BA in Comparative Cultures and an emphasis in Sociology.  After graduating, I taught Oral English in the city of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in China for one year.  Upon returning to the US in 2000, I worked in the corporate office for Vans shoes in Southern CA for three years.  In 2003, my then-fiancé and I moved from Long Beach to San Jose, so both of us could attend San Jose State University for our graduate programs.  While in graduate school, I held various jobs, including Residential Counselor for an adolescent girls’ group home and Graduate Assistant for Orientation at SJSU.  I completed my MA in Education, more specifically, Counseling and Student Personnel from San Jose State University in May 2006.  I came on board as a Drahmann RLC Academic Advisor at Santa Clara University in January 2007.

In May 2009, the RLC Academic Advising positions were changed to include Pathway advising for the Core Curriculum.  This is an exciting time at SCU, as new students will be working with the Core, their major(s) and minor(s), and choosing their Pathways!

And in June 2009, my wife and I welcomed our first child, Teyah, into the world!
