David Van Etten ’55 writes: “Our son, David W. ’96 was recently married to Susan Rudolph in San Francisco. Mary Ann and I are to be blessed with a granddaughter, Daisy Joy, in December. David and Susan live in Oakland, Calif. After retiring in June of 2013, I've continued to be active as Director and CFO of the West Coast Companeros, Inc., to coordinate keeping the 800 strong former Jesuit group together (i.e. annual renewal in Santa Cruz, mulitple online listservs, fundraising activities for various social justice projects conducted by the Companions, etc.).”

Napa County Reads has selected the autobiographic stories by Francisco Jiménez '66, an award-winning writer who chronicles his humble beginnings and struggles to complete his education as the son of migrant workers from Mexico, to be shared with area middle school students.

Napa County Reads will host Jiménez at two presentations in November, as well as at sessions with young students.

Napa County Reads, coordinated by the Napa County Office of Education, is a coalition of educators and residents dedicated to improving the reading experiences of students throughout Napa County with an emphasis on middle schools.

Each year, the committee selects a book that is read in the fall, followed by special events that include a visit from the author. 

Jiménez emigrated with his family from Tlaquepaque, Mexico to California and as a child worked alongside his parents in the fields of California. He received his bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University and a masters and Ph.D. in Latin American literature from Columbia University under a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.

He has have won several national literary awards. His books have been published in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian and Spanish. His stories have been reprinted in more than 100 textbooks and anthologies of literature. He is professor emeritus for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University.

Jiménez’s autobiographical books include: “The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child,” “Breaking Through,” “Reaching Out,” and “Taking Hold: From Migrant Childhood to Columbia University.”

Mark Hurtubise ’79 M.A., president and CEO of Inland Northwest Community Foundation, was recognized for the third year in row (2013 by Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living as well as 2014 and 2015 by Inland Business Catalyst magazines) as among the “Power 50” who has the vision for affecting positive change in the North Idaho/Eastern Washington region. In October 2014, Inland Northwest Community Foundation was named “Philanthropic Organization of the Year” at an annual Spokane Philanthropic Awards reception.

Cathy de Lorimier '87, pastel artist, has joyfully returned to her home state of California after living out of state for the past 27 years. She and her husband Arthur de Lorimier '86, have moved to Sacramento to live close to family. Their daughter Julia de Lorimier '15 graduated this past Spring with a degree in Psycho-Biology and we are very proud of her accomplishments!

Patricia De Fonte '90 BA Communication, graduated from Golden Gate University with a JD in 2002. She has now been accepted to Golden Gate University's Small Business Program for Fall 2015. She has also been accepted, with a substantial merit scholarship, to GGU's Master of Laws (LLM) in Estate Planning Program and will begin classes in Fall 2015. Patricia lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.

Amanda Haughs '03 was named one of PBS LearningMedia's 2015 Lead Digital Innovators. 100 K-12 teachers were recognized for their innovative use of digital media and technology in the classroom and the top 30 applicants were recognized as "leads" in the program. Amanda has taught for seven years as a classroom teacher in grades K-5. This year she begins a new position as a Math and Technology Integration Coach in Campbell Union School District.

Cherie Motobu '09 and Gregory Lambrecht '10 were married on Aug. 1, 2015, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Cherie is a school psychologist in the San Mateo Foster City  school district, and Greg is an English teacher and debate coach at Fremont High in Sunnyvale.
