Richard Wilson MBA '64 and his wife, Celia, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March.

In May, Mike Friedrich '71 received a Master of Theological Studies degree from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. He is also a candidate for ordination as a deacon in the United Methodist Church (a process that will take probably four years).

Mark d'Ercole '71 received a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Master Charles Gracie. By doing so, he becomes registered in the BJJ Federation in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. He is still actively competing in tournaments and is married with two sons in San Francisco.

Robert G. Cruz '71, J.D. '83 was recently hired as legal counsel to the Chamorro Land Trust Commission and the Guam Department of Land Management. He also teaches business law for the University of Phoenix. Cruz is a retired child support referee for the Superior Court of Guam. He still serves as part-time referee for the Traffic and Small Claims Bureau, and as an associate justice pro tem for the Guam Supreme Court on occasion. His son, Dr. Jeffrey Cruz, recently completed his residency in internal medicine at U.C. Irvine Medical Center. His younger son, Keith, is a senior at Stanford University studying international relations.

Last February, William Mathews Brooks '74, identified a new species of coral reef fish, specifically of the goby (Gobiidae) genus, from the Indonesian seas. The new species, Eviota pamae, is a brightly colored orange and pink fish with a bright yellow midlateral stripe that runs horizontally down the side of the body. This tremendous discovery was announced in the April 2013 edition of International Journal of Ichthyology (www.aqua-aquapress.com). The journal highlighted the discovery by featuring the new species, Eviota pamae, on its April 15th cover.

Patrick Yam MBA ’75 is part of a team of Silicon Valley financial and sports luminaries—including 49ers president and former Facebook CFO Gideon Yu, former Oakland Athletics co-owner Steve Schott ’60, local swimmers, and city leaders—that has raised $6 million in an attempt to move the International Swimming Hall of Fame from Florida to Santa Clara, a few backstrokes from the new NFL stadium. Yam is a Menlo Park-based venture capitalist. He serves on the Leavy School of Business advisory board and was a former SCU faculty member.

Bill Krause '75 has published his first book, Federico Moreno Torroba, A Musical Life in Three Acts (Oxford University Press, 2013), with co-author Walter Clark. Since leaving Santa Clara, he earned his M.M. from University of Southern California and Ph.D. from Washington University, St. Louis. He currently serves on the faculty of Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.

Kate McDermott '76 is the creator and founder of Art of the Pie. Since 2006 she has taught the time-honored craft of pie making to thousands. One of the most highly sought-after culinary instructors in the United States, Kate is widely acknowledged as one of the best makers of pie ever. Named "Food Rock Star" by Seattle Magazine, Kate has given her Art of the Pie workshop to food luminaries and has received high praise from Ruth Reichl, former editor of Gourmet, Dorie Greenspan, Elise Bauer (Simply Recipes) and many others. Her blackberry pie was featured in Saveur Magazine's Top 100 Issue and appeared on the cover. She has been written about in numerous books, magazines & blogs by award-winning authors. A practitioner of kindness, she aspires to pass on the craft of pie-making to as many as she can. She has two children and lives at her home, Pie Cottage, in Port Angeles, WA.

Antonio Reyes J.D. ’77 of Visalia has been appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown ’59 to a judgeship on the Tulare County Superior Court. Reyes, 60, has been in solo private practice since 1990. He has a law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary's College. Reyes is a Democrat and fills a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gerald F. Sevier J.D. '71.

Doug Cosbie ’79 has been named athletic relations associate and head football coach at Kamehameha Schools Kap'lama. Cosbie joins the Warriors with an extensive background in athletics, playing for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League for 10 years under legendary coach Tom Landry, being selected to the Pro Bowl in each season from 1983-85. He played his collegiate ball at Santa Clara University before being drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft.

Brent Jones '85 was inducted to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame on May 23.

Jones, who grew up in the Bay Area, was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1987 draft, but he was traded to the 49ers before playing a game for the Steelers and spent his entire 11-year career in red and gold. He made the Pro Bowl four times and won three Super Bowls with San Francisco.

Kim Olson '87 lives with her husband, Jim Beit, and their three daughters in Bronxville, New York. She is a principal in advisory practice at Deloitte. She works in the intersection of risk management and regulation, primarily serving bank and investment bank clients. She specializes in assisting clients to implement Dodd Frank reforms, Federal Reserve stress testing requirements and capital adequacy standards, and risk and control governance structures.

Susie Hornbeek '88 and husband Gary Hornbeek and their two kids ages 11 and 8 live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Susie is a senior marketing consultant for technology companies and formerly director of Integrated Marketing at Silver Springs Networks.

L.A. County Deputy Public Defender Luis Rodriguez ’89, J.D. ’92 is running unopposed for president of the State Bar of California for 2013-2014. Rodriguez, the current vice president, was admitted to the State Bar in 1994 after attending college and law school at the University of Santa Clara. He is a former president of the California La Raza Lawyers Association, the Mexican American Bar Association and the Latino Public Defenders Association. MABA, which Rodriguez headed in 2001, issued a congratulatory statement calling him “an exemplary role model for the next generation of Latino/Latina lawyers in the State of California.”

Xavier Romano M.A. ’92 writes, "After taking on a consultancy in Saudi Arabia during the 'Arab Spring' near the Yemen boarder, and witnessing one Tahrir Square protest in Cairo, I found myself back in California in April 2012 taking on the role as Fresno campus director of Alliant International University. After more than a year in Fresno I have a newfound respect for Silicon Valley, the Bay Area, and a dozen years in the 'wilderness' of Illinois while at Knox College! Good to be back in California—and my time in the Middle East prepped me well for the heat of Central California.  ;-)"
