125th Anniversary of the Alumni Association On April 27, 1881, the annual gathering of Santa Clara College Philhistorian Debating Society provided the opportunity for the many alumni present to begin an Alumni Association. Article three of the first constitution demonstrates the purpose of the Association as the original members envisioned it: ~ Art. 3 The object of this society shall be, to strengthen and perpetuate College friendships; to preserve in her sons a warm regard for the favors of the College, and a lively memory of her maternal care and substantial benefits; to spread abroad a knowledge of the great opportunities to be found within her walls for study, the acquisition of science, and the cultivation of virtue; and to enjoy, at stated times, social reunions at the College. As an Association, we took the opportunity in 2006, 125 years later, to celebrate this legacy. We recognized that while our world, our University, and even the words we use to express ourselves have changed dramatically, the original purpose of the Association remains intact. As our current constitution reminds us, we continue to "cultivate, maintain and enhance life-long relationships between the University and its alumni for mutual benefit" and we "initiate and encourage activities and programs that generate goodwill and support for SCU’s Jesuit mission." |
