Alumni for Others (AFO) Community Service Progam

Dec 207 San Francisco Toys for Tots

The Alumni for Others (AFO) program at Santa Clara University gives alumni and friends an opportunity to work with other SCU alumni on various community service projects.  These projects are usually only a one day or even a half day commitment.  We work with low income schools, churches, and/or social service agencies in need. Read the AFO Mission Statement to learn a little bit more about this special program.

Types of Projects

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Rebuilding Together
  • Fixing up or tutoring at inner city Catholic schools
  • Partnering with Nativity schools (which are run by the Jesuits to educate middle school students from low income or at-risk families)
  • Sponsoring socials for the families at Domestic Violence Shelters

Project Locations

While many of these service projects are held in the greater Santa Clara Valley, we also have outreach efforts in other areas such as
  • Peninsula/San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego
  • Seattle
  • Portland
  • Sacramento
  • Oakland/East Bay
  • Orange County
  • Phoenix
  • Denver

Plan an AFO event

Working with your chapter, you can plan your own AFO event! Please contact Mary Modeste Smoker ’81 in the Alumni Office at msmoker@scu.edu or 408-554-6800 to discuss planning a project in your area.

Immersion Opportunities

In January 2008, we embarked upon our second AFO immersion trip, a group of alumni and friends traveled to New Orleans to assist in the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita rebuilding effort. Visit our immersion page for details on the second annual trip and information on future immersion trips.
