Background

The Santa Clara University Alumni Association established this award in 1981, during its 100th anniversary. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus in 1534 and once wrote that "love ought to manifest itself more by deeds than by words”.   Since 1851, as a Jesuit, Catholic University, Santa Clara has been explicit in its intention to evoke from students a commitment to fashioning a more humane and just world, and to cultivate persons engaged in a wide variety of activities that serve humanity.

A Santa Clara University education provides men and women with the intelligence to make a difference and the hearts to want to do so.

As such, the Santa Clara University Alumni Association deems it appropriate to name our highest honor the "Ignatian Award."
