Annual Alumni Retreat
March 6-8, 2009

Join fellow SCU Alumni at our annual Alumni Retreat on March 6-8. This oceanside retreat is a great opportunity to take time to reflect, relax, and renew!

Soccer Alumni Drafted to the Professional Leagues

Congratulations the three women and one men’s soccer alumni who were drafted in January to major league teams.  Brittany Klein ’08 will be joining the Chicago Red Stars along with SCU teammate Chioma Igwe ’08 and Brandi Chastain ’91 will be playing locally with the San Jose’s FC Gold Pride.  Brittany, Chioma, and Brandi will be joining Marian Dalmy ’07 (Chicago Red Stars), Lesile
Osborne '05
(FC Gold Pride), and Aly Wagner ‘02 (LA Sol) who were allocated before the draft. 

On the men’s side, Jide Oyuabiyi ‘09 was drafted by the New York Red Bulls joining the ranks of SCU soccer alumni in the MLS.

SCU Alumni Join the Ranks in Washington D.C.

This will be a big week for two of our alumni in Washington DC.  Janet Napolitano ’79 has been officially named Secretary of Homeland Security, as Leon Panetta ’60 awaits his confirmation hearing for Director of the CIA, scheduled for this Thursday.  These two Broncos put SCU in the rank of universities such as Yale and Dartmouth who have alumni in the new administration.  “Eat your heart out Stanford,” click here to read more.


 


Santa Clara University One of the Country's Best Values in Private Universities

Santa Clara University remains one of the country's best values in private universities, according to the latest ranking by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. In its annual report, the magazine named Santa Clara University 43rd in best value among private universities nationwide.

The annual survey, "2009 Best Values in Private Colleges," ranks the top 50 private universities and the top 50 liberal arts colleges by reviewing more than 600 private institutions and measuring academic quality and affordability.

Passing of the Beloved Father Hugh Gray & Jim Sweeters

Father Hugh Gray who served many years at SCU in the English Department and as Dean of the College of Humanities died peacefully Sunday, January 11, at the age of 84. 

Fr. Gray entered the Society of Jesus in 1942.  He taught at Santa Clara from 1961 to 1979.  He served as chairman of the English department at SCU and in 1968 assumed the duties of Dean of the College of Humanities. After his time at SCU, he held the positions as Academic Vice-President of St. Louis University, Vice-President of the University's campus in Madrid, Spain, and Minister of the Jesuit Community at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD.  He retired to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos in November 2001.

Jim Sweeters, a former Jesuit, Vice President of Student Services/Dean of Students, Director of Athletics and longtime faculty member in the Religious Studies Department passed away on Tuesday, January 13 from the effects of Alzheimer's disease.  During his tenure at Santa Clara, he designed and taught new courses such as Eastern Religions, Theology of Non-Violence, and New American Religions.  His wife, Jo Ann Vasquez, who served as Dean of Counseling Psychology and Education and as Vice Provost, was with him when he passed.
