New Face in the Alumni Office
Muriel Isaac
The Alumni Association would like to introduce a new face in the office! Muriel Isaac joined the team in March after working at Stanford University for four years. After starting in the Graduate School of Business Alumni Association where she planned reunions, she worked with the undergraduate Alumni Association managing regional chapters in Philadelphia and Santa Barbara. "I feel fortunate to have been warmly welcomed into the SCU family, and am excited to have the opportunity to help plan events like the Grand Reunion, which will bring the community together and showcases the best that SCU has to offer." A New York City native and University of Pennsylvania alumna, Muriel enjoys keeping up with friends and family both near and far, reading, dancing (especially hip hop and salsa), and playing Wii games.

AFO Means Alumni for Others
Community Service
The Santa Clara University Alumni Association will celebrate it's 128th anniversary on April 27th. In recognition of our Anniversary month, we are designating April as our National Month of Service, and we would like to highlight Broncos who volunteer in their community. As alumni continue to engage in service projects throughout the year, we will use April to highlight all of the ways Broncos honoring their university by giving back to their communities by collecting pictures and stories.
Our SCU Alumni for Others (AFO) program, which organizes community service projects in many of our chapters, is one avenue for volunteering. However, we know that many of you outreach directly in your own communities and we truly want to hear about your experiences. We invite you to share your stories, or those of fellow Broncos with us, so we can celebrate all of the wonderful work SCU alumni do throughout the country.
We will be posting a selection of these projects on our website to foster participation and inspire new endeavors. Celebrate our National Month of Service by sending your stories and photos to msmoker@scu.edu.
Now more than ever, we need to reach out and share our gifts with those less fortunate. If you would like to organize a project in your own chapter, please contact Mary Modeste Smoker '81 at msmoker@scu.edu.

SCU Student Spotlight
Kelly Estes '12
Not too many college freshmen tote around a heavy portfolio of media clippings, awards, and photos of themselves giving a presentation in San Jose City Council chambers. But Kelly Estes, a student at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business, is not your ordinary freshman.
She recently became the third-youngest-ever commissioner on the Santa Clara County Human Relations Commission, a 15-member citizen advisory board that researches issues of discrimination or prejudice and provides recommendations to the county’s Board of Supervisors.
“I appointed Kelly because of her commitment to community service. Her enthusiasm is infectious,” said County Supervisor Ken Yeager, who selected Estes for the post in late January. “It is not just her youth. Her determination to get things done is inspiring. I knew she would make a great addition to the Human Relations Commission.”
Her appointment is one of several notable accomplishments for a 19-year-old who already has an impressive personal resume including:
- completing at age 16, a documentary on her great uncle’s World War II experiences and presenting it to local residents on Veterans Day
- leading a major initiative for Santa Clara County’s Youth Task Force on Internet predators and cyberbullies
- earning a black belt in Tae Kwon Do
- winning Instructor of the Year in Tae Kwon Do (at age 13)
- serving as a reporter for the school newspapers at Archbishop Mitty High School and Santa Clara University
- serving as president for two years in a school-based political discussion group called Junior State of America
- Oh, and did we mention she works two days a week at an intellectual-property law firm in Sunnyvale?
Estes learned about the commission— which is normally populated by seasoned adult lawyers, activists, and nonprofit workers— when she was 16. At the time, she was doing research on the Internet looking for opportunities to “do something that was important in the grand scheme of things” within her intended profession of law and possibly politics.
She was drawn to the variety of issues on which the citizen-based, voluntary commission monitored and advised the County Board of Supervisors. The commission’s mission statement notes that it will address “incidents of prejudice and discrimination” in the county that are based on “race, religion, national origin, cultural background, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other factors.”
Still, being only 16 at the time, Estes decided to start by joining a youth-oriented subgroup, the Youth Task Force. Within a few months she was leading a group that focused on Internet predators and cyberbullying, which entailed a yearlong survey of more than 1,000 student Internet practices and the presentation of testimony before her now-colleagues on the Commission.
Later, as her mandatory graduation at age 18 from the Youth Task Force loomed, she reminded a staffer in Supervisor Ken Yeager’s office, that she wanted to join the full commission. She finally got her wish, just after her 19th birthday, when one of Yeager’s staffers reached her on SCU’s campus by phone to say Sup. Yeager had decided to appoint her.
On the commission, she intends to continue the cyberbullying and online-predator prevention work she started on the Youth Task Force, by serving as a liaison for Santa Clara County’s youth. She will also serve as a member— alongside three lawyers— on the commission’s Justice Review Committee, which is charged with hearing legal issues.

President's Speaker Series: God and Politics in the Middle East
On Wednesday, May 6, SCU will host Avraham Burg, who has been a leading figure in Israeli politics for the last 20 years, for the last installment of the President's Speaker Series.
Though he has struck nerves and drawn fire from both the left and right ends of the political spectrum, Burg continues to sound alarms surrounding the future of Israel. New Yorker writer David Remnick sums up Burg’s position: “Burg warns that an increasingly large and ardent sector of Israeli society disdains political democracy. He describes the country in its current state as Holocaust-obsessed, militaristic, xenophobic, and, like Germany in the nineteen-thirties, vulnerable to an extremist minority.”
The final installment of this year’s President’s Speaker Series begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Mayer Theatre. Tickets are available for $25 each and can be purchased at www.scu.edu/speakerseries.
Learn more about Avraham Burg on the President’s Speaker Series Web site.
