~ AN eNEWSLETTER FOR SCU ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ~
Father Locatelli's Resignation
On Friday, March 14th, Paul Locatelli, '60 S.J., President of Santa Clara University for the past 20 years, announced his decision to accept an expanded role as Secretary of Higher Education worldwide for the Jesuit order in Rome, and his intention to resign as President of SCU effective during the 2008-09 academic year.
"I am deeply grateful for the love, support, and assistance from all of you students, faculty, administrators, trustees, other board members, alumni, friends, and the larger Santa Clara community," Locatelli wrote in a letter to the campus community. "Your passion, experience, talents, and energy have helped build Santa Clara's exceptional legacy." For more about Locatelli's tenure at Santa Clara please visit the presidency
web site.
Locatelli will stay on at Santa Clara until his successor is named and will work with the Santa Clara Board of Trustees through the transition process. His replacement will be selected by the Board of Trustees, after a targeted search of Jesuit candidates with outstanding educational backgrounds, work experience, knowledge, motivation, and interpersonal skills. For more information please visit the presidential search
web site.
New Harrington Learning Commons, Sobrato Technology Center, & Orrade Library Opens its Doors
As soon as President Paul Locatelli, S.J., Congressman Mike Honda, and
Provost Lucia Gilbert cut the ribbon on Monday March 31s, shouts of, "This is amazing!" and, "Incredible!" could be heard as the excited crowd surged inside and began exploring the 194,000-square-foot new
Learning Commons, Technology Center, & Library.
Students, faculty, staff and community members milled around checking out every square inch of the four-story building -- from the new Sunstream Café to the third-level outdoor patios with plush lawn furniture.
"It's very colorful," said freshman Sydney LaCour. "It makes me excited to come to here and work."
March 31st marked the first day the $95 million study space opened to the public, a grand opening that came five months earlier than initially announced. The early opening will allow the staff to observe the ways students use the library so the space can be adjusted to best accommodate the needs for the 08/09 academic year.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Fellow Bronco to be a Part of Olympic History
Past Alumni Board of Director's member Jill Mason '99, will carry the Olympic Torch on its trek through San Francisco on Wednesday, April 9th. Struck by a drunk driver while on a training bike ride and currently in a wheelchair, Jill presents to students in Sacramento about the effects of drunk driving and is involved in the "Every 15 Minutes" program. Jill is carrying the torch in San Francisco, almost four years to the day of her April 11th accident, to show that no one should let a devastating experience change his or her attitude towards life.
To learn more about Jill and her trek, carrying the torch through its only North American destination, please visit San Francisco Chronicle
online or Jill's personal web site.
Way to Go Jill!
Celebrate the Association's Anniversary by Helping Katrina Victims
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans more than two years ago, it destroyed lives, homes, businesses and libraries. On the 2nd Annual SCU Alumni Immersion Trip to New Orleans this past January, the volunteers also learned how great the need is for children's books. Today we are asking for your help to replace them!
Here's How:
Buy It: a Barnes and Noble Gift Card of any domination. Send it to the SCU Alumni Office and we will send it to the Volunteer Donations Coordinator in New Orleans, who has a discount contract with Barnes and Noble. You may also visit Barnes and Noble
online to purchase an electronic gift card and have it sent directly to SCU.
Bring It: Bring a new or gently used copy of your favorite children's book (no textbooks please) to the next alumni event in your area. We will then ship these books to New Orleans.
Contribute it: For those who want to do more, for a donation of $250 Recovery School District can purchase a full set of 30 classroom books. The donation can be from one family or multiple families and should be mailed to the Alumni Office.
The first shipment of books and gift cards will depart for New Orleans on May 1st. Please send all donations to the Alumni Office at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053. All checks must be made out to Santa Clara Alumni. All monetary and in-kind donations are tax deductible and a donation letter will be provided to you for tax deduction purposes.
