Online Services Tip of the Month
Adding the Santa Clara Network on Facebook

You can now add the Santa Clara Network to your Facebook profile.  The network is maintained by Facebook and can be added using either an scu.edu or scualum.com e-mail address.

The Facebook Santa Clara network will allow you to indicate to those on Facebook that you went to Santa Clara.  In addition to the Santa Clara network, make sure to become a fan of the Association's Page at www.scu.edu/facebook to learn about upcoming events and network with other alumni.

Since scu.edu addresses are reserved for current students, faculty, and staff most of you will need an scualum.com address to access the network. Scualum.com is the Association's e-mail forwarding system.  It allows for you to have an e-mail address that will forward to the e-mail provider of your choice.  The best thing is... if you change your e-mail provider, all you have to do is update your e-mail forwarding account.  There's no need to tell everyone your new e-mail address.

To Sign-up for a scualum.com e-mail address:

1.  Go to www.scu.edu/incircle and sign-in to your inCircle account. (Note: If you don't have an inCircle account you can create one by clicking Join Today and using your alumni ID # .)
2.  Go to My Account on the upper right side of the screen.
3.  Click on Lifelong e-mail on the left side of the screen.
4.  Create the first part of your e-mail address (Note: Can be any configuration ex. jdoe@scualum.com or john.doe@scualum.com)
5.  Indicate which e-mail provider you would like to forward the e-mails to.

To add the Santa Clara network:

1.  Log on to your Facebook profile
2.  Click on Setting on the upper right corner
3.  Choose the networks tab
4.  Type in Santa Clara University on the Join a Network Field
5.  Fill in appropriate information and either use your scu.edu or scualum.com e-mail address.

University Names New Vice President for Enrollment Management
University Press Release

Santa Clara University President Michael Engh, S.J., has named Michael B. Sexton as the University’s new vice president for enrollment management.

Sexton spent 18 years in enrollment management at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., as dean of admissions. He will help Santa Clara University chart its strategy for student recruitment, enrollment, diversity, and financial aid.

“Michael Sexton has a great track record in the field of enrollment management,” said Engh. “Mike has achieved a national reputation for attracting top students to an evolving and growing institution, and we are lucky to have him. We are looking forward to the vision and experience he will bring to this position.”

Acknowledging the vital role enrollment management plays in Santa Clara University’s strategic goals, Sexton will report directly to Engh.

Sexton comes from Lewis & Clark, an institution with a total student enrollment of just over 3,300 and a $231 million endowment, to SCU, with more than 8,700 students and a $540 million endowment. He oversaw Lewis & Clark College’s enrollment efforts during a period when their applications grew from 2,100 to more than 5,300, an increase of almost 150 percent, while at the same time increasing diversity as well as the grade point average and standardized scores of entering freshmen.

Sexton, 56, previously worked at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., and Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa.

He was introduced to Santa Clara University on a personal level several years ago when his daughter was accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences. “I had heard of Santa Clara professionally, but during her years on this campus I became very familiar with the quality of the Santa Clara experience and education, especially from a parent’s perspective,” he said.

“Her four years at Santa Clara were transformative and as her parents we very much valued the experience that she, and students like her, got at the university,” he added.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to help take Santa Clara to its next level of excellence,” Sexton said. “Fr. Engh and I are, in a sense, starting our tenure here together. I passionately believe that higher education is the best investment families can make for their children, and I appreciate having been a part of that process for 30 years.”

Sexton will be moving with his wife Colleen to start his new post Sept. 1.

He has a B.S. in mathematics from the State University College at Buffalo, N.Y., and an M.A. in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Sexton is a member of the College Board and the National Association for College Admissions Counselors (NACAC), the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admission Counseling, and the Education Conservancy. A nationally known speaker and conference panelist on issues, Sexton has presented at NACAC and The College Board and is known for his commitment to diversity and access to higher education.

“I have valued my time at Lewis & Clark but coming to Santa Clara University presents new opportunities,” Sexton said. “I look forward to working with an experienced staff in admissions and financial aid to further the University’s outreach to students in California and beyond.”

Santa Clara Grads are Among the Highest Paid in the Country
University Press Release

Santa Clara University’s undergraduate degree recipients earn among the highest salaries of any U.S. college or university alumni, even a decade or more after getting their diplomas, according to a new survey by PayScale, a compensation-data company based in Seattle.

Santa Clara University ranked in the top four percent in the survey—coming in 20th out of nearly 600 colleges or universities nationwide. The survey ranked schools by their graduates’ salaries during two time frames: within five years of receiving their bachelor’s degree or “starting salaries”; and ten years or more after commencement, or at “mid-career.”

SCU graduates reported making an average of $58,000 in starting salaries and $111,000 at mid-career. These numbers were better than those reported by graduates from Amherst, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia, according to PayScale’s survey.

Kathy Potter, director of the university’s Career Center, attributes the findings to SCU graduates’ strong grounding in their subject matter, as well as a stellar work ethic cultivated at SCU and through internships in Silicon Valley.

“I’ve been told by employers that SCU students are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed in the job. They have been well-educated in their fields and are willing to learn, ” she said.  “And, especially now, companies are also drawn to the emphasis on ethics that the university provides.”

Santa Clara also ranked as the second most popular school for marketing managers, the survey found.

“These results don’t surprise me a bit, ” said Shelby McIntyre, chair of the marketing department at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business. “We turn out excellent grads, who go to work at companies that people all over the world are dying to get into, like Google, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, and Facebook.”

McIntyre added that there is “an army of SCU grads behind virtually every Silicon Valley company,”  which helps students network.

PayScale's data came from its 1.2 million website users, who self-report their salaries and their alma maters.  The company only included respondents whose highest degree is a bachelor’s degree, so lawyers, doctors and other advanced-degree recipients were not part of the results.

PayScale did not disclose some details of its methodology, such as exact sample sizes. PayScale says its “confidence interval” for most schools is 90 percent at the median, plus or minus five percent (plus or minus 10 percent for elite/Ivy League schools).

The full survey results can be found here.

The survey’s results were written up in the July 20 New York Times blog, Economix .
