Magdeburg Hemispheres
Magdeburg Hemispheres, Late 19th Century
This pneumatic experiment demonstrated the existence of a vacuum through the use of an air pump. When the two large iron hemispheres are joined together and air is pumped out of them, it would take tremendous strength to pull the two halves apart.
