Optical Demonstration Device, c. 1850, Soleil a Paris
This optical device measures 3.5" x 3.5" x 3.5". It was made by the Paris firm Soleil, which was established in 1816 by Francois Soleil (? - 1846) and became one of the premier instrument making firms in the world. The firm was carried on by Francois' son Jean Baptiste Soleil (1798-1878) and grandson Henri Soleil (? - 1879). When Jean Baptiste retired in 1849, the majority of the business passed to his son-in-law Jules Duboscq. For all practical purposes, the Soleil name covers the period 1816-1849.
