Time flies
Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 1:38 PM
Hey all,
Seriously I am astounded and how fast the time goes by, I cannot believe it is November already! I feel like it was just yesterday that I moved into my dorm and gained my independence. It is kind of scary how fast the time has gone by, the quarter is almost over and that means I’m in the home stretch to make sure my grades are where I want them to be.
Also another thing I’ve noticed is that I barely think about home much due to the fact that I consider my little dorm my home now. I mean do not get me wrong, I cannot wait to go home and see my family, but I definitely will miss SCU. Another thing is that by now the cafeteria food has bored me out of my mind but I guess that is normal and expected. But there is never a boring moment here and that is what is exciting. I’ve acquired many new talents such as actually taking the Round Table pizza survey in order to get free appetizers and learning that Febreeze is the solution to everything.
Lastly before I go attempt to do the laundry I’ve been avoiding I’d just like to say that it is awesome that it is November and I’m still in flip- flops and shorts. I think that is one of the main reasons I do not miss the coldness of Chicago back home.

Off Campus adventure
Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 10:50 AM
Hello again!
So this past Saturday my friend and I decided to venture off of campus and go to the shopping mall. This was our second time really going off of campus and it was quite eventful. We first started off by missing the bus outside of SCU and having to wait a complete forty minutes for the next one to come. Then that bus took us into downtown San Jose and we were kind of lost when we got there. After about ten minutes of just standing around we realized that we had to get another bus in order to get to the shopping mall. Right as this happened we realized that the bus on which we were suppose to be was pulling away. We literally had to run after the bus in order to catch up to it. I felt like such a tourist, not the best feeling ever.
We finally made it to the mall and it was an awesome time. Being off campus made me realize how enveloped I have become in my own little world. It reminded me that there is a world outside of my Santa Clara life. Anyway on the way back my friend and I missed our train and lost our bus. We missed diner but overall a great experience.
Till next time

It rains in Paradise
Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 1:24 PM
Hello all,
So today was the first day that the weather was less than perfect. It was rainy and dreary. Although the weather a huge bummer, my fellow classmates were not down in the dumps. Many went outside in the rain and slid around in the mud, just as if they were little kids. Though the idea seemed appealing, I did n not venture out in the rain instead I just sat inside and watched a movie with friends. I can’t believe that I have only been here a couple of weeks it feels like I have been here forever. Its kind of creepy how I refer to my dorm as my home now. For instance at times I’ll catch myself texting my friends, “are you home? “ when asking them if they are in their dorm. Whenever I catch myself doing this I get a little stunned, but the statement is true, this is my home away from home.
The stress level has not risen very much and I hope it stays this way. My time management skills are definitely getting better and I don’t feel like I waste too much time in a day. However I do still waste too much time on Facebook, but hopefully that will be a habit I can terminate, well at least by the time finals come around. I have been neglecting to cal my parents lately, they are pretty upset but they understand that it is not because I don’t miss them, it’s just that I’m busy and gaining more independence. Ah, I should probably get back to my reading, this was a nice break however.
Until next time

Lets be kids again
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 1:17 PM
Hello!
Thankfully I am feeling one hundred percent better now, all I needed was some rest and some heavy dosage medication. At the moment I am extremely busy, I am still having some trouble getting a schedule going and don’t seem to have time to do everything I need or want to do. Time management is on the top of my to do list, I really need to acquire that skill fast. There is so much to do here at SCU that just picking a few things is a challenge.
To help me stay organized I am trying my best to keep two planners, a school planner and a social activity planner. I think this might be too hopeful, but it seems like a good idea right now. See my problem is that I feel like I have a lot of free time, yet it goes by fast and before I know it the day is over and I haven’t done my homework. But don’t worry I have not missed an assignment yet, although I have missed a lot of sleep due to my procrastination.
Speaking of procrastination, today instead of reading my chapters worth of reading for my government class I decided to go to our Monday night social on the eleventh floor. We have these every Monday and they usually include free food and a fun activity. Today the activity was finger painting; it was a lot of fun although my artistic skills are low. In the end it was fun to have something carefree to do and forget about homework. Which reminds me that I still have a lot to do, so this will be the end of my post for today. Next week I have exams, which promise to be delightful, until next time!
Sincerely

Sickness, and Big small time accomplishments
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 1:15 PM
Hey!
So my homesickness has come and gone but now I am really just sick. This comes as no surprise because it seems that everyone on my floor is sick, two people even had to be quarantined for fear they might have swine flu. Luckily, I do not have swine flu, just a common cold that makes me feel miserable.
Being sick at college and away from home is a very un-happy experience. Here I am lying on my bed on a Friday night while all my friends are out. I guess it is not that bad, having some quiet time around here is pretty nice. But nonetheless I am not feeling very up beat right now. Being sick really makes me miss my mom, seeing as how she is not here to take care of me. Goodness life at home spoils a person so much. But being sick here is not so bad, because the nurse is only a few blocks away and ready to help.
Although I am thoroughly enjoying catching up on my facebook and seeing movies over and over again, I keep remembering all the things I have to do. Which brings me to my next topic; laundry, yes that one letter word that used to bring fear to my knees doesn’t anymore. I did it last night for the first time ever, and I did it successfully, I did not end up with shrunken clothes or tie-dyed socks. I can’t take all the credit for my accomplishment seeing as how my friends helped me every step of the way. But it was nice to get that out of the way and accomplished. The washing machines and dryers in the basement of Swig are pretty nice and new, so it was not that hard to use them. Although I did not mess up my laundry I did forget about it and had to go pick it up this morning, it was still there, so that was a relief. Hopefully I will feel better and have more exciting things to talk about next time!

A long way from the Windy City
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 1:12 PM
Hello!
My name is Brenda Alba, and I am a freshman at the beautiful Santa Clara University. I am a long way from home , all the way from Chicago, IL but the transition to beautiful weather has not been that bad. Plus, I highly doubt that I’ll miss the snow and cold weather. Also, I am a Political Science and Spanish double major, and I am pretty sure that will not change during the next four years.
I survived my first week of college, I feel like I have been here for a month but it has only been a week. Homesickness is only bad in the morning and then it goes away, plus I am technologically connected to my family in every way.
So far I have gained a lot of experiences in my short week here. I locked myself out of my room the first night and had to have my CF, call campus security for me,such a freshman rite of passage, but they were really nice about it. Also, I woke up in the middle of the night sick and my friend called the EMS for me and they came to my room. Thankfully I was just dehydrated and they simply gave me a Gatorade and left. Quite the eventful week, and a lot of fun, but I hope this isn’t a weekly occurrence.
Lastly , my classes are awesome, my professors are really passionate and interesting. The workload is very manageable but I am sure it’ll get hectic in the coming weeks. Well that is all for today, in my next blog I’ll depict my first attempt at laundry, promises to be an adventure.
Sincerely
B.Alba
