1. Antitrust Prize
This prize is made possible through the settlement from the Western Sugar Antitrust Litigation, MDL 201 (N.D.CA). This class action was brought against the major sugar refiners and producers in the Western United States on behalf of numerous private and governmental classes. The presiding judge, the Honorable Edward N. Cahn, requested that this fund be used for “academic work and support, such as research, scholarship, lectureships, teaching, and books in the field of Antitrust and Consumer Protection Law.” The Antitrust Prize is awarded to the student with the highest grade point average in the Antitrust class.
2. CALI Excellence for the Future Award
The CALI Excellence for the Future Award recognizes academic excellence. CALI produces award certificates for students who receive the highest grade in a course. To encourage excellence in specialty, as well as general areas of study, this award is open to all courses taught at the law school. It may be awarded to students at all levels of study.
3. The Chargin Prize
Established in 1969 by their son, Victor, the Chargin Prize is given annually in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Chargin. The prize is given to the full-time student holding the highest grade point average for three years of law school.
4. LARAW Award
Certificates of Excellence in Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing (LARAW) are awarded each year to the top five students in each LARAW section for their outstanding class work.
5. Mabie Outstanding Law Graduate Award
Through the generosity of the Inez Mabie Foundation, this award is given annually to the student nominated by the faculty based on his or her academic excellence, leadership, contributions to the law school, and to the community. The student selected is recognized at commencement by leading the student procession.
6. Martin Moot Court Prize
A gift of $10,000 was received in 1991 from the law firm of Greines, Martin, Stein & Richland to endow a prize for the law school’s annual moot court competition. This prize was established in honor of Alan G. Martin (Class of 1976). An annual award of $500 is presented to the winning team. The prize is split evenly between the two team members.
7. Harold R. McKinnon Prize
In honor of Harold R. McKinnon, ’15, this prize was established in 1979 by the firm of Bronson, Bronson, & McKinnon. The award is given to the best brief in the preliminary rounds of the law school’s annual moot court competition.
8. Richard S. Rosenberg Labor/Employment Law Scholarship and Prizes
Richard S. Rosenberg ’77, is a partner in the firm of Ballard, Rosenberg, Golper & Savitt in Southern California. The firm specializes in labor and employment law on behalf of management. Through Richard Rosenberg’s generous donation, the law school is able to award prizes to the students who receive the highest grade in employment discrimination and labor law classes. In addition, the school is able to award a scholarship of $1,500 to the student who shows excellence in labor and employment classes and an interest in pursuing a labor and employment law career.
9. Erma E. Southern Prize
This prize was established in 1979 by Erma E. Southern, longtime secretary to the dean of the law school. The prize is awarded each year to the part-time student with the highest grade point average for four years of law school.
10. The Herman Wildman Social Justice Writing Award
This award honors the memory of Herman Wildman, 1912-2002, who practiced law in New York and California. The award is given annually to the writer of the best student essay on a public interest and social justice topic. The winner receives an honorarium and a plaque.
11. Witkin Awards
Certificates of achievement are awarded each semester by West Group. The awards are presented to students attaining the highest grades in particular subjects. For more information, contact the Law Records Office.
