William P. Murphy is a Principal in Ernst & Young LLP’s Performance & Reward group. Bill is the Performance & Reward location leader for the North Central Sub-Area. Based in Cleveland, he advises companies on human resource, compensation and benefits issues.
Bill advises public and private companies on the design, implementation and operation of their executive compensation philosophy and strategy and the programs to support that strategy. He also advises on SEC executive compensation proxy disclosures rules and executive compensation issues in mergers and acquisitions. Bill’s experience includes the taxation, accounting and administration of equity plans and nonqualified deferred compensation plans, including the implications of and assisting with the implementation of FAS 123R. Bill also has several years of experience in retirement, estate and financial planning.
Bill received a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Dayton; a J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University; and an LL.M. in Taxation from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He has also attained the certified equity professional designation through Santa Clara University’s Executive Development Center. Bill is a member of the National Association of Stock Plan Professionals and World at Work. He also is a member of the American Bar Association and its Section on Taxation and Section of Labor and Employment. Bill has lectured nationally on topics such as stock option and equity planning, including the application and implementation of FAS 123R; equity and deferred compensation planning, including Section 409A; and special executive compensation issues in mergers and acquisitions.
