Quarterly Venture Breakfast: 2012 - Year in Review

Tuesday, February 26
8:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Palo Alto, CA

2012 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. VCs invested roughly $27B, down from $29B in 2011, but VC fundraising was up to $20B vs $14B in 2011, so the VCs invested $7B more than they raised in 2012, $15B in 2011, and $10B more than they raised in 2010, an unsustainable model. Three of the top 4 sectors in 2012- cleantech, biotech, and medical devices - all face major obstacles and spark much skepticism from many investors. Learn More

Speakers:
Steve Bengston - PwC
Sharon Wienbar - Scale Venture Partners
Moderated By: Allison Leopold Tilley - Pillsbury
Stay tuned for speaker updates!

3D Printing and Scanning SIG Event: Investment Trends & Printer Marketing and Technology (LAUNCH EVENT)

Tuesday, January 29
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Mountain View
more info

3D Printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing, is an exciting and potentially game changing technology that will dramatically alter the way products are designed, manufactured, distributed and financed.  A standard digital file (.stl) of an object is created, either by using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software or a 3D scanner, and is sent to a dedicated machine which builds the object layer-upon-layer in a material such as plastic, metal or ceramic.

Today the technology is mainly used for rapid-prototyping and in a select number of industries for high-value low-run production.  Adoption is increasing across more industries as high quality commercial printers become more affordable.  High resolution industrial desktop machines can be purchased today for less than $10,000, whereas the same quality of output would have cost in excess of $100,000 five years ago.  The home printer market is growing exponentially as well, as hobbyists and enthusiasts have embraced the open sourced technology which originated from the "RepRap" project (Self-Replicating Manufacturing Machine) while the cost of these home desktop 3D printing machines plummets.

Two years ago life balance expert Mary LoVerde did the unthinkable: she sold her dream house and gave away nearly all of her earthly possessions so she could live being "at home wherever she is." She embarked on a global make-it-up-as-you-go adventure and learned many lessons along the way.  She cordially invites you to take your next step:  Do you believe there's more to life- and just aren't sure how to move forward?  Are you feeling stuck or facing a challenge- and don't know what to do about it?  Do you have a big dream- but naysayers are telling you, "It'll never work"?  Are you ready for a new adventure- and would love to know what that looks like?  If you said yes to any of the questions above this program is for you.  With her trademark combination of humor and wisdom, frequent Oprah guest Mary LoVerde will help you shine a light on what is holding you back.  She'll challenge you to face the reasons why and then offer you an abundance of valuable lessons to help you lead the life you want now…not someday.  Are you ready to quit what's not working and kick-start what does? If so, take your next step and say yes to The Invitation.

Consumers are living more of their lives online and exposing their personal information in new ways using the multitude of devices and services available to them. At the same time, consumers' understanding of how to protect their privacy—and their confidence in corporate privacy practices—remains low. What can shift consumer privacy behaviors and perceptions to narrow this gap? This expert roundtable will examine the latest trends in privacy practices across the online industry. The forward-looking discussion will include a look at the world of apps, juxtaposing the need to provide consumers with privacy protections with the concern that overly stringent oversight could stifle innovation.
