Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Message from the Director 2007-08undefined

Welcome to the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University,

A career in entrepreneurship has never held greater promise. Technology is driving globalization at an unprecedented rate.  The pace of innovation is accelerating.  Advancements in IT, biotech, cleantech and other sectors are creating opportunities for visionary entrepreneurs to solve problems on a global scale. Today more than ever, entrepreneurs enabled by technology hold the potential of changing the world for the benefit of humanity.

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara University is at the global nexus of high technology industry, venture capital and entrepreneurial talent.  Santa Clara plays a vital role in the economic health of Silicon Valley, currently enrolling 8,377 talented students from over 22 countries in our top-ranked undergraduate and graduate programs.  In addition, Santa Clara supports a notable alumni network of over 70,000 members; more than 50 % of whom live and work in the greater Bay Area.

As a Jesuit University, Santa Clara educates leaders of competence, conscience and compassion who help fashion a more just, humane and sustainable world.  For prospective students seeking to change the world, there is no better place to prepare for a career in entrepreneurship than at “the Jesuit University in Silicon Valley.”

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) was established in 1998 by the Leavey School of Business as an interdisciplinary initiative to bridge industry and academia and foster entrepreneurial spirit.  In September 2005, I started as the Center’s first full-time director and together with an outstanding advisory board set a course to transform Santa  Clara University into a global leader in entrepreneurship education.

At our 2nd Annual Founders Club Banquet we announced a $15 million Endowment Campaign to advance our educational mission of producing graduates competent in the entrepreneurial process and equipped with clear pathways for launching new ventures.  Our campaign goals lay the foundation for achieving our vision by providing funds for (a) scholarships to attract top students, (b) faculty and lecturers to develop rigorous curriculum, and (c) staff support for alumni entrepreneurs and the general administration of the Center.

As an alumnus (B.A. History ’01) and former Silicon Valley startup executive, my role as the Center’s director is personally meaningful.  My hope is to leave a legacy through the Center that provides encouragement, development and support for Santa Clara University’s next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.  It is an honor to represent innovation and entrepreneurship at SCU and to benefit from the visionary leadership and support of the CIE Advisory Board and Founders Club.  Together we have set a course to transform Santa Clara University into a global leader in entrepreneurship education.  I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,
