Summer '13 Newsletter



On behalf of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we'd like to share some of our upcoming events and exciting news and events of the last few months:
  • We welcomed 35 to the 2013 California Program for Entrepreneurship (CAPE) for Kickoff Weekend July 12-14.
  • We welcomed Yahoo! Chairman Maynard Webb to campus for the Winter CIE Speaker Series and Peter Gotcher to campus for the Spring CIE Speaker Series.   
  • Startup Expo brought Silicon Valley startups seeking SCU interns to campus.
  • VCIC News:  SCU hosted the Silicon Valley regional competition in February, and a team from SCU competed in the West regional competition. 
  • Minor in Entrepreneurship:  Twenty-five students have now received a Minor in Entrepreneurship.  We're also pleased to report that enrollment has increased 77% in the 12/13 academic year.
  • The quarterly CIE field trips continue to be quite popular with our students.  The Winter CIE Field Trip brought students to Google and Spring CIE Field Trip was to LinkedIn
  • We welcomed the inaugural class of the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship degree program.  
  • We helped student and alumni entrepreneurs with Office Hours for Entrepreneurs sessions
  • Congratulations to 2013 Outstanding Student Entrepreneur Alexis Babb.
  • We continue to expand internship and career offerings to students at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Alumni and community partners continue to contact the CIE with these opportunities, which we are happy to share with our students.  
  • Coming up next:  Working on our 13/14 schedule of events including quarterly CIE Speaker Series, field trips, office hours for entrepreneurs, and Global Entrepreneurship Week activities.
We look forward to an exciting remainder of the Summer as we prepare for the return of students and as we continue to work to expand our curriculum offerings, cross-campus collaboration efforts and events.

Welcome 2013 CAPE Cohort

The CIE recently welcomed the 2013 CAPE Cohort to campus for the program kickoff weekend July 12.  The weekend included a welcome lunch reception, orientation, class modules and a guest speaker panel featuring a representative from each of the three CAPE alumni classes.

The CIE welcomed Maynard Webb, Yahoo! Chairman, LiveOps Chairman and author of Rebooting Work, Transform How You Work in the Age of Entrepreneurship, to campus for the Winter CIE Speaker Series on February 6, 2013. Maynard shared his story about his extensive experience in developing and leading high-growth companies and provided insight into his latest book.   This free event was  co-sponsored by the School of Engineering Office of the Dean.

Spring CIE Speaker Series Welcomes Peter Gotcher, May 8, 2013

The CIE welcomed Peter Gotcher, independent venture investor, Chairman of Dolby Laboratories, Chairman & CoFounder of TopSpin Media, and Director of Pandora Media, Line6 and Trion Worlds for the Spring CIE Speaker Series on May 8, 2013.  Peter shared his exciting story about his extensive experience in the public and private startup environment, the venture capital and investment arena as founding partner of Redpoint Ventures and his transition into private equity investing-and how a drum machine got the ball rolling.

Startup Expo Connects SCU Students to Startup Internships

The CIE partnered with the SCU Career Center and undergraduate student club SCEO to bring Startup Expo to campus for the third year.  This unique internship and career fair is open only to area startups seeking SCU talent.  This free event draws approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.  Mark your calendars for the 2014 Startup Expo scheduled for March 5.

SCU Team Nest Capital competed against teams from Arizona, Colorado, San Diego, Thunderbird, and UCLA in the West Regional Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC®) held in March at the University of Southern California.  

The graduate student network Entrepreneurs Connection organizes the internal competition to determine the competing team.  This event is done in a full-scale replica of the competition-special thanks to the EC team and volunteers for a fantastic event.

The CIE coordinates support and coaching for the team including faculty advisor, Dr. Robert Hendershott, Associate Professor of Finance, who accompanies the team to the competition and also serves on their mentor team, which included Andy Bartley, Rocky Pimentel, Steve Foster, Shashank Saggar, Steve Goldberg, Dyuman Bhatt, and Ravindar Mittal.

In our fifth year as host, SCU welcomed the Silicon Valley Regional  VCIC to campus.  The VCIC is the premier MBA competition for venture capital and entrepreneurship since 1988, and now has 50 events on 4 continents with over 1,000 MBA students competing.  The graduate student network Entrepreneurs Connection coordinates the exciting event, working closely with the Graduate Business Programs Office and the CIE.   This event was held on Friday, February 15, in the Leavey School of Business.

Twenty-Five Receive Minor in Entrepreneurship Since Rollout in 2011

Enrollment Grows by 77%

The CIE is pleased to report that we have congratulated 25 students who received the new SCU Minor in Entrepreneurship since the rollout in Fall of 2011.  New classes, interesting electives and an internship experience come together immersing students in the world of entrepreneurship in the heart of Silicon Valley.  In just 2 years, we now have more than 70 students pursuing the minor.

We accept applications on a rolling basis-students are welcome to stop in and learn more.

Alexis Babb Named 2013 Outstanding Student Entrepreneur

Congratulations to 2013 Outstanding Student Entrepreneur Alexis Babb.  This honor is awarded annually by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to a graduating student enrolled in the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program in recognition of significant achievements in the program, acknowledgment of accomplishments in entrepreneurship and the promise of future success.   Alexis was presented with the award at the annual Leavey School of Business Senior Awards Ceremony.

Nicholas and Peter met while assigned as project partners for an undergraduate business course at SCU.  One evening while studyiing for an exam, they debated and discussed company building, leadership, and the critical role of consciously-driven, for-profit organizations in the business community.  A near decade later, they find themselves continuing such conversations and working to turn those theories into reality.  Read on to learn about their financial technology, LifeCounts.

SCU '12 alumnus Evan Sanders initially began a personal 30-day challenge towards becoming a better man, which soon developed into a lifelong challenge – therein establishing The Better Man Project. He shares his daily journey towards betterment, and the many lessons he learns throughout the process.  His first e-book about The Better Man Project was launched earlier in 2013 and is now available through Amazon, iTunes, Kobo and Sony.

New Master of Science in Entrepreneurship Degree


The Leavey School of Business recently welcomed the first cohort to pursue the new Master of Science in Entrepreneurship.  This 14-month degree program focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and business creation by taking theory to reality in courses designed to provide the skills to create, fund and launch an enterprise. 

Students pursuing a Master of Science degree in Entrepreneurship have an interest in starting their own company, becoming a partner in a startup/early-stage company, working in a venture capital or angel investing firm, managing an incubator--the possibilities are many.

The Master of Science in Finance degree and the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship Degree are two new 12/14 month graduate degrees offered by SCU.  For details on all graduate degree programs offered by the Leavey School of Business, please visit the Graduate Business Programs website.

Office Hours for Entrepreneurs

On a quarterly basis, the CIE brings in Silicon Valley experts to meet with students and alumni in 20-mintue one-on-one sessions for assistance with business plan review, pitch critique, presentation review, funding discussions or a general startup Q&A session.  Special thanks to our Winter and Spring Office Hours for Entrepreneurs experts, CIE Advisory Board members Andy Bartley and Jim Thompson.

Students also meet with the CIE on an ad-hoc basis year round for startup review, assistance and competition prep/assistance.  Can't wait for one of our quarterly sessions?  Contact CIE Executive Director Dan Aguiar to set up a meeting.
