Winter '13 Newsletter

Greetings!

On behalf of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we'd like to share some of our upcoming events and exciting news and events of the last few months:

We're looking forward to welcoming Maynard Webb to campus on February 6, for the Winter CIE Speaker Series.
Startup Expo internship and career fair returns to campus on March 6.
VCIC News: SCU will host the Silicon Valley regional competition in February, and a team from SCU will compete in the West regional competition in March.
Minor in Entrepreneurship: Twenty-one students received the new Minor in Entrepreneurship.
Twenty-six completed the 2012 California Program for Entrepreneurship (CAPE).
Fall CIE Speaker Series welcomed Steve Blank to campus for a fireside chat with Leavey School of Business Dean Drew Starbird.
The 2011-2012 CIE Speaker Series ended with a roar with GoPro! founder Nick Woodman.
The Fall CIE Field Trip brought students to Tech Shop San Jose.
We continue to expand internship and career offerings to students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Alumni and community partners continue to contact the CIE with these opportunities, which we are happy to share with our students.

We look forward to an exciting Spring quarter as we continue to work to expand our curriculum offerings and cross-campus collaboration efforts. We've also moved into a larger space in the suite next door to our former location, feel free to stop by Suite 109 and say hello!

Join Us: Winter CIE Speaker Series Featuring Maynard Webb, February 6, 2013

The CIE is pleased to welcome Maynard Webb, LiveOps Chairman and author of Rebooting Work, Transform How You Work in the Age of Entrepreneurship, to campus for the Winter CIE Speaker Series on February 6, 2013. Maynard will share his story about his extensive experience in developing and leading high-growth companies and provides insight into his new book.

A limited number of seats are available for this free event, co-sponsored by the School of Engineering Office of the Dean. Reserve your ticket today.

Startup Expo Returning in 2013

The CIE is partnering with the SCU Career Center and undergraduate student club SCEO to brin the 2013 Startup Expo to campus for the third year. This unique internship and career fair is open only to area startups seeking SCU talent. Startups are welcome to register for this free event, which draws approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.

SCU Team Nest Capital will travel to Los Angeles to compete against teams from Arizona, Colorado, San Diego, Thunderbird, and UCLA in the West Regional Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC®). held in March at the University of Southern California.

The graduate student network Entrepreneurs Connection organizes the internal competition to determine the competing team. This event is done in a full-scale replica of the competition-special thanks to the EC team and volunteers for a fantastic event.

The CIE coordinates the team's faculty advisor, Dr. Robert Hendershott, Associate Professor of Finance, who will accompany the team to the competition and also serves on their mentor team, which includes Andy Bartley, Rocky Pimentel and Steve Foster.

Now in our fifth year as host, SCU will again welcome the Silicon Valley Regional VCIC to campus. The VCIC is the premier MBA competition for venture capital and entrepreneurship since 1988, and now has 50 events on 4 continents with over 1,000 MBA students competing. The graduate student network Entrepreneurs Connection coordinates the exciting event, working closely with the Graduate Business Programs Office and the CIE. This event will be held on Friday, February 15, in the Leavey School of Business.

Twenty-One Receive Minor in Entrepreneurship

The CIE congratulated 21 students who received the first-ever SCU Minor in Entrepreneurship in 2012. New classes, interesting electives and an internship experience come together immersing students in the world of entrepreneurship in the heart of Silicon Valley.

We accept applications on a rolling basis-students are welcome to stop in and learn more.

2012 CAPE Cohort Completes Program

Congratulations to the twenty-six emerging entrepreneurs who completed the 2012 California Program for Entrepreneurship Program offered by the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University.

This six-month program culminated with a business plan pitch competition and celebratory certificate ceremony and dinner at the historic Adobe Lodge.

Information on the 2013 California Program for Entrepreneurship is expected to be available in March.

CIE Speaker Series Welcomes Steve Blank

The CIE welcomed serial entrepreneur, author, and Silicon Valley legend Steve Blank for a fireside chat with Leavey School of Business Dean Dr. Drew Starbird. This event was the signature event of the CIE's Global Entrepreneurship Week activities.

2011-12 CIE Speaker Series Goes Out with a Roar with Nick Woodman, Founder of GoPro!

The final CIE Speaker Series of the 2011-2012 academic year went out with a loud, enthusiastic chant of GoPro! as we welcomed Nick Woodman to campus. Nick shared the exciting evolution of GoPro, the world's leading activity image capture company. The chants got even louder with his generous giveaway of one of everything they make to more than a dozen happy attendees.

Whisk SF

Maggie Spicer '07 is Founder and Chief Creative at Whisk, a San Francisco startup changing the way companies approach employee perks and foster wellbeing. Whisk designs programs to bring balance to the workplace, from breakfast and afternoon treats to health and movement sessions and even skill-building workshops. By partnering with some of the finest local producers and instructors San Franciso has to offer, Whisk brings the vibrancy and culture of the city directly into the office environment.

The Entrepreneur:
Viktor Petersson '08

The Venture:
WireLoad

While still a student at Santa Clara University, Viktor Petersson '08 founded his first company together with his friend Alexander Ljungberg-Wireload. Their first public product, YippieMove, was born right here at SCU. When he received word that his email account would be deleted 60 days after graduation, Viktor decided to create an easy to use email migration system.
