About Joseph S. Alemany

Joseph Sadoc Alemany y Conill, O.P. was born in Spain in 1814, and as a Dominican priest, was sent to the United States in 1840, where he worked extensively as a missionary in the eastern and southern states before coming West as the first American bishop in California in 1850. His work to strengthen the Church's influence in the West led to his appointment as the first archbishop of the new Archdiocese of San Francisco.
