James R. Lugg

Mr. Lugg is a native Californian and a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley majoring in Soil Science.

His career started in Cooperative Extension in Kings County in 1956 and later in Monterey County. He joined Bruce Church, Inc. in 1963 as Research Director. In 1966 he was named President of TransFRESH Corporation. He served as a Director of Fresh International Corporation, the holding company for Bruce Church, Incorporated, Fresh Express Foods, and a number of other companies, including TransFRESH, until the company was sold in 2001. Other accomplishments include managing the development of packaged salads for Fresh Express. He was Executive Vice President responsible for Food Safety and Quality at Fresh Express until he retired in January 2009. He now serves as a consultant to Fresh Express/Chiquita Brands International, Inc.

Mr. Lugg continues to serve on several university advisory groups. In June 2008 he received the E. E. "Gene" Harden Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California. In 2007 he was awarded a UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources Citation for outstanding service to the College. In 2005 he was named to the UC President's Advisory Commission on Agriculture and Natural Resources and in 2003 he was named to the NAREEE Advisory Board of the USDA.
