Course Overview:
Study the complexities of the China business environment in Beijing.  This two-week, 3-unit program extending from August 19 through September 1, 2012 is held at The Beijing Center in the heart of Beijing.  Students will stay at the Center housing and take substantive courses on various aspects of the business environment, including such topics as:

  • An Overview of China's Economic Growth
  • The Role of the State
  • Challenges and Regulations in the Financial Sector
  • The Impact of Chinese Culture on Business
  • Identifying the Chinese Market
  • Advertising in China
  • Business Ethics
  • Sourcing From China
  • Equity, Entrepreneurship, and Other Opportunities

Students will work in teams to participate in an intensive negotiation exercise between a non-Chinese entity and a Chinese entity.  Through this exercise, students can get a better feel for how such negotiations would take place with a China entity (represented by business professionals working in China), and how to effectively integrate their learning into a near real-world experience.

In addition to these substantive lectures and exercises, all of which are presented by China faculty and business professionals working in China, students are given the opportunity to learn about China’s culture and heritage through visits to major sites, such as the Great Wall, Tian’anmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace, and the contemporary 798 Art District.  These guided site visits are augmented by lectures on Chinese history, the Chinese spiritual world, and Chinese contemporary art.

The weekend will be spent in Guangjhou, visiting this factory town and learning about the manufacturing industry in China.

Students will have several opportunities to meet with SCU alumni and others working and doing business in China, through a series of panel discussions addressing the practical complexities of doing business in China and with Chinese entities.

Overall, students who attend this intensive 2-week substantive course on the business environment in China, will earn 3-units of both academic and practical experience that they can take with them to work.
