On-line networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace, allow friends, acquaintances and/or professionals to connect and communicate with each other and have become an essential part of many people's daily lives.  While most of these communications and interactions enrich our lives and enhance our business productivity, sometimes they can become problematic, especially when inappropriate or harmful information is published online.  Erika Rottenberg, General Counsel of LinkedIn, a professional networking site with over 34 million members, representing 170 industries in 200 countries, will talk about opportunities and pitfalls posed by on-line networking sites and how we can be smart users of the sites.  This will be a moderated discussion followed by an audience question and answer period.

Erika Rottenberg is Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of LinkedIn, responsible for LinkedIn’s worldwide legal matters, including privacy. Prior to LinkedIn, Erika served as General Counsel for two public technology companies, providing valuable experience in dealing with the regulatory policies and challenges specific to technology centric public companies. Most recently, Erika was Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, for Nasdaq-listed SumTotal Systems. • Additional Elective for MTI Concentration

    Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 2:55 PM

MKTG 696 as currently taught by Prof. Montermoso counts as an elective for the MTI Concentration.  Prof. Montermoso's version is largely focused on technology examples -- versions taught by other faculty will have to be separately approved.  The "computer" may not automatically note this as a valid elective - so double check.

MKTG 696: Business to Business Marketing
Business-to-Business (B2B) Marketing encompasses those management activities that enable a supplier firm to understand, create, and deliver value to other businesses, governments, or institutional customers.  In the context of these business markets, value refers to the economic, technical, service, and social benefits a customer firm may receive for buying the market offering.  Using core readings and in-depth case analysis, the course will introduce and apply the guiding principles of B2B Marketing, which include using value as the cornerstone for decision-making, focusing on business processes and the business as a "buying center" with the various roles of participants, stressing business across borders, and accentuating working relationships and business networks.  Through this course, students will also develop critical analytical and problem solving skills for a variety of business marketing situations.
Prerequisites: MKTG 551 and MTKG 553

If someone is interested enough to contact Connie, please post a comment here about what this even is, and whether it sounds useful to MTI concentration students.

  • Oct 6th: Bryan Neider of Electronic Arts -- Let's ask about SPORE!

    Thursday, Sep. 25, 2008 6:50 PM

October 6th: The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Managing Technology & Innovation Concentration invite you to a reception and talk by Bryan Neider of Electronic Arts.  He is in the perfect position to talk about the difficult decision to hold back their latest blockbuster game, Spore, until it was ready.  Innovative firms (e.g., EA, Pixar) often have to make difficult timing decisions.  How do you know when an innovation should be held back?

We've planned a social hour / mixer on the 3rd floor Terrace from 6pm - 7pm.  Then Mr. Neider will speak in the Weigand Room (Arts & Sciences) from 7pm-8pm

This event will also give you the chance to meet the 15 participants in the CIE program "Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship."  Fourteen of the participants are from Italy, and one from Australia.  They will be with us for the next two terms.  Start your networking now!

Please RSVP to Nick Kurns NKurns@scu.edu

Bryan Neider, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Electronic Arts Worldwide Studios

Bryan Neider is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of EA Worldwide Studios with responsibility for managing budgets and financial operations.  Mr. Neider joined Electronic Arts in 1989 and held several positions in finance, operations, and corporate development.

Prior to joining EA, he served at the accounting firm of Touche Ross, at Data East USA and Microprose/Spectrum-Holobyte.  Mr Neider earned his History degree from Santa Clara University and his M.B.A. from California State Hayward.

Meet with all the Concentration Advisors at Back to School Night during the special class schedule.

7pm to 8:30pm First floor Lucas Hall

"The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for our graduate business students to meet faculty and staff from various departments and resources.  The event is organized in a resource fair fashion for all of our graduate business students, faculty, and staff.  Our hope is that our students will take advantage of the opportunity to discuss their programs with both academic and non-academic departments, and to learn about the student network organizations and opportunities for them to participate in co-curricular activities."

Great chance to help us plan for the rest of the year -- Including meeting with the Italian entrepreneurs attending the CIE's Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship program.

Come to Monday or Tusd.... or both

Help me decide how best to communicate with Concentration members.

  • Be a Founding "Fan"

    Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 5:00 PM

Based on some feedback from your classmates, I've started a Facebook "page" for the
    Managing Technology & Innovation Concentration.

    http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/santa-clara-CA/Santa-Clara-University-
    Managing-Technology-Innovation-Concentration/31256323078

Please become a "fan" of the page if you are interested in this concentration.  This will be our way of building a community of students and alumni.  (I think the additional site is necessary as this site doesn't have the ability to communicate with one another.)  Ideally we'll find a way to use the sites synergistically and not just duplicate the information.

I look forward to talking with you about the design of the pages, and how best to communicate and build community around the Concentration.  Looking forward to seeing you all at the Fall get together (date to be annouced soon).

  • PARC Forum -- Caputuring Business Value from Research Innovation

    Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 11:25 AM

    PARC FORUM *Thursday*:
August 7, 4:00 - 5:00 pm, George E. Pake Auditorium at Palo Alto Research Center (www.parc.com/directions)

TITLE: A New PARC: Capturing Business Value from Research Innovation

SPEAKER: Mark Bernstein, Palo Alto Research Center President and Center Director

    ABSTRACT:

PARC is at work developing a model that optimally couples its unique class of research innovation with multiple potential paths for creating business value. In the transition from corporate lab, there have been new choices made that seek to balance the research we want to do with the revenue we need to generate. This talk will touch on the business values that have shaped research directions and how the research has generated business opportunities.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Mark Bernstein has led one of the world's premier centers of innovation since 2001. He was named President and Center Director at this time to lead PARC in its transition from Xerox research division to independent research company. Under Bernstein's leadership, PARC has broadened its research agenda and developed areas of commercial focus while retaining close strategic ties with Xerox Corporation.

  • Interaction Drives Success

    Monday, Jun. 2, 2008 8:01 AM
As the year draws to a close, let's think about how to use this site to your benefit.  I just went through all the calendars listed above and nothing struck me as being worthy of posting here -- but my perspective and networks are not yours.  Feel free to forward announcements of events you think other MTI concentration students/alumni would find helpful.  Also, feel free to point us to other websites you have found helpful.  Are there particular blogs you find useful?  We could create a blog referral page (perhaps a wiki?)

I have been on sabbatical this year and so our face to face interactions have been limited.  Look for more on campus integration as we start the Fall term.  Feel free to suggest activities.  Network/club officers -- please think about how we might join forces to bring powerful events to campus.

Have a safe and productive summer.  This site will be live over the summer -- but will need your suggestions for content.
