IDIS 695: The Silicon Valley - China Connection
Exploring the Business Culture in Beijing and Guangzhou

Through a combination of case discussions, readings, lectures, guest speakers and a 2 week immersion trip to Beijing and Guangzhou you will examine the operations of firms with ties to Silicon Valley and China. You will begin with a session discussing the historical conditions that have shaped the existing business environment in China then explore various strategic challenges encountered by managers when expanding internationally, such as how to build a sustainable stratgic position in emerging and established international markets and how to balance the benefits of global integration with the needs of local responsiveness. 

If you are interested in being an effective global manager, this course should be in your academic plans. 

  • Meet interesting and important leaders of business and experts in Chinese culture, economy and workforce.
  • Explore the dynamics of doing business between Silicon Valley and China.
  • Visit companies such as Carrefour, Agilent, Walmart, Toyota and tour cultural sites such as the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Olympics Stadium.

Pre-travel class dates: Friday, July 16, 23, 30 and August 6; 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Travel dates: August 22 - September 4, 2010

Post-travel class dates: September 17; 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Attendance at all sessions at SCU and in China is mandatory. No exceptions.

Prerequisites: Specific class pre-requisites are still to be determined however all students must have completed two quarters in the MBA program and have a 3.0 GPA at time of application and during travel.

Cost: Estimated administrative fees to be determined; Administrative fees are in addition to regular tuition fees (6 units); The course fee will cover the cost of lodging in China (August 23 - September 4), breakfast daily, some group lunches, guide services, buses, business visit arrangements, limited cultural experiences and airfare between Beijing and Guangzhou. Travel to the host country and back to the Bay Area is the responsibility of each student.
