  • Business Undergrads Receive Degrees on June 11

    Wednesday, Jun. 15, 2011 10:00 AM

Be a man or woman for others. Those were the words from commencement speaker and world-renowned author Dr. Khaled Hosseini to graduating seniors at Santa Clara University’s 160th undergraduate commencement ceremony Saturday, June 11.

Nearly 500 business majors and their classmates from other SCU divisions listened to Hosseini, a 1988 Santa Clara alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He told them that much of what he learned on campus as an undergraduate student is more relevant to him today than he could have ever imagined. (Read the full article from SCU News here.)

Receiving the Bachelor of Science in Commerce degrees were 489 seniors, whose degree requirements were met in seven majors: Accounting, Accounting and Information Systems, Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Operations Management and Information Systems (OMIS). Last year, the Santa Clara University School of Business awarded 478 BSC degrees.

More than 460 graduate business students will receive degrees from Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business this year, making the Class of 2011 one of the largest in recent memory. The class celebrates its achievement at the University’s Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Friday, June 10, in the Leavey Activity Center.

SCU’s Business School will award 427 MBAs, an increase of more than 100 candidates over last year’s class of 322. The MS in Information Systems (MSIS) program will graduate 38 students, the largest cohort to graduate since the business technology degree was introduced in 2005.

The Santa Clara MBA program was launched in 1959 as one of the first graduate business program in the nation designed exclusively for working professionals. The School offers an Evening option, a 22-month Accelerated option, and an Executive MBA serving senior level managers and directors. The MSIS degree combines business practice and technology management for leaders in the IT sector.

The Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University began in 1923, and was one of the first business schools in the country to receive national accreditation. Its undergraduate business, MBA, and Executive MBA programs are consistently ranked among the top in the nation. The curriculum at all levels emphasizes the leadership role of business in creating an ethical society as well as business responsibilities for social justice and sustainability in the global marketplace. The School opened its new $49 million building for undergraduate, graduate, and professional business education in Fall 2008. For more information, see
