RMI Names New Chairman
Friday, May. 24, 2013
Barry Feld, president and CEO of Cost Plus World Market, is the new chair of Santa Clara’s Retail Management Institute (RMI) Advisory Board, said the Institute’s Director Kirthi Kalyanam this week.
“Barry has been an RMI partner for many years,” said Kalyanam, Professor of marketing in the SCU business school. “His work with our students, faculty, and the board has enhanced the Institute’s offerings over the years, so we’re delighted he has assumed this leadership role.”
Feld’s involvement with SCU began when he met Professor Kalyanam at an Investor Conference held in New York City. Professor Kalyanam invited Barry to Santa Clara University to speak to RMI students. He soon became more involved in the program, personally walking RMI students through Cost Plus stores and guiding them to discern the unique strong points of the retail model. He was asked to join the advisory board in 2008 and has been an incredible asset for RMI ever since.
The Retail Management Institute began in 1980, when Santa Clara professors worked with retail industry leaders to launch a research and career development center for retailers and students. The Institute consists of three major programs: The Retail Studies Program, which is open to undergraduate students in every field who are interested in retailing careers; the Executive Education Program, which helps develop programs of current interest for individual companies, trade organizations, and other industry groups; and the Retail Workbench Research and Education Center, which aims to expand knowledge and solve important problems occurring in today’s rapidly changing retail environment.
The Retail Management Institute’s Advisory Board meets twice annually, and is made up of about 20 national leaders in the retail industry, including senior executives from Cost Plus World Market, Gap, HUGO BOSS, IBM, J.C. Penney, Macy's, Trader Joe's, and Williams-Sonoma.
Mr. Feld is a graduate of Essex College and the Stanford University Executive Management Program, and a 20 year past member of the Young Presidents’ Organization. He has served as a President and CEO for specialty retail companies for over 25 years.
