 Kirthi Kalyanam : Safeway's Upgrades Met Economic Headwinds : San Jose Mercury News

Kirthi Kalyanam, J.C. Penney Professor of Marketing, told the Contra Costa Times that Safeway’s chain-wide upgrades were the right move, but the 2008 recession had put pressure on its profitability. making the grocery store an attractive takeover target.

“All of a sudden, consumers were voting with their pocketbooks and decided to go back to Walmart,” he told the reporter, adding that if the chain had not invested in the upgrades, “it would have been much harder for them to be a viable company.” The article appeared in the Times and San Jose Mercury News, and other papers around California.
