Nonprofit Organization Founded by LSB Student Nominated for a National Award
Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010
In 2004, senior finance major Ben Greer and his younger brothers founded the nonprofit organization Back to School Backpacks , which has recently been recognized for its impact on the community and is now nominated for a national award. Back to School Backpacks gives backpacks and school supplies to underprivileged students at the start of each school year. The organization was founded when Ben and his brothers Alex and Zach were challenged by their parents to give back to their community. Presently in its seven years of existence, Back to School Backpacks has donated nearly 3000 backpacks filled with an entire year’s worth of supplies.
Back to School Backpacks is currently nominated for the “small charity of the year” award being given by Stay Classy, an organization that offers a social fundraising solution to nonprofit organizations. This award is just one of many that are being presented at Stay Classy’s 2nd annual “Classy Awards” event. Back to School Backpacks first won the award for the “best small nonprofit organization” in the Bay area, and has now moved on to compete at the national level.
The award is being given based on a poll that is being conducted on Stay Classy’s website. Voting for the event closes on November 5th, at which time the votes will be tallied and the winner selected. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 7th in San Diego, California. The award- winning organizations will receive donations in the form of cash and in- kind services.
