 NPI Fellows

The NPI Fellows are students who participate in an internship with our NPI community partners. There are a total of five internships that are offered each quarter. These are the testimonies of students who have interned.

  •  Hailey Bazlen, '15 (Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits)

    Major/Minor(s): Marketing
    Hometown: Woodinville, WA
    Interest/Hobbies: I love horseback riding, skiing, hiking, and camping.

    How I got involved and what I am learning/ hope to learn:
    Right after I first heard of the NPI Fellowship opportunity, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the program. Through NPI, I am currently a Social Media Marketing and Communications Intern at Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN). Specifically within SVCN, I work with HandsOn Tech Silicon Valley, which is a program that provides technology consultation to nonprofits. This helps the nonprofits become more efficient in their technology use, so that they can spend more time working towards their cause! I am already learning so many useful skills in marketing such as how to manage and optimize social media, using Google AdWords and Analytics to create and analyze ads, creating my own tech byte presentation on social media use to present to nonprofits during consultations, and website management. Since HandsOn Tech is within SVCN, I am being immersed into a team culture where everyone collaborates together, so I am learning a variety of skills outside of marketing as well, that will provide me with useful skills for my future career. I will be working on a large variety of projects, but one that I am especially excited for is being responsible to develop and implement a social media marketing plan for HandsOn Tech.

    The NPI program has provided me with the ability to put my skills to work for a good cause and help out the local community, while mutually benefiting from the internship by gaining invaluable experience. NPI is an amazing program and I am honored to be a part of it. I look forward to the rest of my junior year involved in the NPI.

     

  •  Sean Roe, '15 (San Jose Councilmember Sam Liccardo's Office)

    Major/Minor(s): OMIS and Spanish/International Business
    Hometown: Mill Creek, WA
    Interests/Hobbies: hiking, guitar, piano, geography, aviation, church ministry

    How I came to get involved with NPI and what I'm learning (or hope to learn):
    I'm learning how to partner will small business within San Jose's 3rd Legislative District and promote economic development. I currently work for Councilman Sam Liccardo and have been truly amazed by the power of city government in regards to making neighborhoods stronger.

    My first encounters with NPI were at a carniceria called Yolanda’s in District 3. I played the unique role of focusing on financials and modernizing a point of sale (POS) system in the store while using my Spanish language to communicate more effectively with the primarily Latino, Spanish-speaking clientele. 

    My work at Yolanda’s continues today, mainly as a result of what I learned through my experiences there. I realized that I committed to a neighbor, a community member, and more importantly, a family member of this larger global family, that I would see the project through until its completion. It’s a project that will “take as long as it takes.” NPI has taught me to stay true to my word, see projects through until the end, and most importantly, to seek justice for those we serve. It was a humbling experience and I know I will continue to focus my efforts in this area of San Jose through Sam Liccardo’s office.

     
  •  Gonzalo Jose Salguero, '15 (Washington Elementary School)

    Hometown: Bell, CA
    Interests/Hobbies: I love to play soccer and watch movies, listen to music and play video games. 

    How I came to get involved with NPI and what I'm learning (or hope to learn):
    I found out about NPI through Bronco Link and thought it would be a good match to give back to Washington Elementary School and the surrounding community since it reminds me a lot of the community and schooling that I come from.

    At Washington Elementary School I assist volunteer and program coordinator Brian O'Halloran with the programs he already had in action like “Adelante” and will also be able to facilitate my own workshop to teach the students about economics and politics. I will work as an asset for Washington Elementary School to mentor their trouble students.

     

  •  Adriana Sarocco, '16 (CET Office of the Center Director)

    Hometown: Boston, MA
    Interests/Hobbies: running, music, sustainability, smiling, my cats, coffee, snow globe collecting, underwater basket weaving, yodeling, traveling.

    How I came to get involved with NPI and what I'm learning (or hope to learn):
    I first heard of NPI when I was involved in the Emerging Leaders Program at SCU. The NPI program caught my attention, and a year later I finally got the opportunity to apply and become a part of this amazing program. Through the NPI program I hope to be immersed in the community around me, and to be able to make a difference using the skills I have learned in my courses at SCU. I hope to not only make a positive impact on those that I work with, but to also gain experience and knowledge in the management and infrastructure of a non-profit organization. I have been working with NPI for only a short period of time, but I am already gaining so much hands-on knowledge through the program. I have already learned so much about myself, and how I interact with others in the office. I can't wait to see what fun the future holds!

    Hometown: San Jose, CA
    Interests/hobbies: running, basketball, TV shows, outdoor activities, electronic dance music.

    How I came to get involved with NPI and what I'm learning (or hope to learn):
    I came to NPI as a transfer student looking to get more involved in giving back to the community. I knew that this opportunity would be a good way to further develop my communication skills and to gain some more work experience. Learning more about how the Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative has been developing, I believe it is an amazing opportunity for students on campus to get involved with the community. As I now have just recently began working at Center for Employment Training (CET), a trade school for lower-income students, I look forward to working with the students and faculty members who share the same enthusiasm in giving back to the community.
