Tri-Beta is the honor society for undergraduate biology majors, who are dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of the study of biology and broadening the boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Declared biology majors who have completed the introductory biology sequence, while maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA (both in biology & overall) are invited to apply for membership each spring. Sigma Xi is the honor society for scientific research. The society encourages original investigation in pure and applied science. Students who have demonstrated an aptitude for original scientific research are eligible for associate membership. The requirements for full membership include noteworthy achievements in research as demonstrated by publications, patents, written reports, or a dissertation.

Biology Student Clubs

ClubBio welcomes all SCU students interested in the Biological Sciences. We organize fun social events and service projects that help students who enjoy Biology to meet one another and interact with biology faculty outside the classroom.

Pre-Health Club/SCUPH seeksto help students understand and organize the medical and/or other graduate school process while providing guidance, support and health related information in a safe, intellectual, and familiar atmosphere. Current issues surrounding the medical field are presented for student discussion and awareness. Students will also become more involved in the community through volunteer activities relating to health issues.

CHE (Chicanos/Latinos in Health Education) helps to provide information to students about Medical School or other Health related fields and help the Latino community in the San Jose area. Our club was founded by Latino students whose aim was to inspire other Latino students to pursue a career in the health fields and sciences; however, our club is open to all students in the hope that other students will gain an interest in medicine and other health related fields.

GREEN! (Grass Roots Environmental Efforts Now!) is a grass roots organization focused on educating for the preservation of our environment. Build on your college experience by doing a service to your local community and the global environment. Participate in service projects in the greater Santa Clara community such as beach cleas-ups in Santa Cruz, habitat restoration in Santa Clara, exotic species removals in Golden Gate Park, trail and creek clean-ups in local communities, and annual Earth Day festivals focused on environmental awareness.

The De Novo Program seeks to identify, recruit, and mentor underepresented minority students in undergraduate research. Based on the principle that participation in undergraduate research is often the most formative educational and motivational experience in the growth of a scientis, engaging minority students in undergraduate research is critical for improving the long-term diversity in the scientific community. De Novo's objective is to use research experiences to provide the scientific training --- including laboratory, presentation, and networking skills to propel underrepresented minority students into graduate studies leading to research and health careers. The De Novo program also supports research efforts and travel to scientific national conferences. Contact: Dr. Angel Islas aislas@scu.edu
