Chris J. Vlahos, PhD is Head of the Atherosclerosis-Vascular Wall Drug Discovery Team in the Cardiovascular Research Division of Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana. His research interests include the development of inhibitors against cellular signaling targets and the impact of the resulting inhibition on signal transduction pathways. He received his BS (cum laude) in Chemistry from Santa Clara University in 1982 and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in the Department of Biological Chemistry in 1987. Trained as a protein biochemist/enzymologist, he joined Lilly Research Laboratories in 1986 as a Senior Biochemist in the Molecular Biology Research Division, and has been in the Cardiovascular Research Division since 1990. Dr. Vlahos established a screen for inhibitors of PI 3-kinase, the result of which was his discovery of LY294002. He is currently studying novel kinase and phosphatase targets involved in the cellular mechanisms of cardiac and vascular diseases.
