Classical Languages and LiteraturesThese programs emphasize the study of ancient languages and the literature surviving in those languages and are supported by courses in other aspects of ancient literature and civilization. Majors who plan to do graduate work in classics should acquire at least a minimal familiarity with both Latin and Greek. In addition to any lower-division courses in Latin or Greek that the student may require, majors must complete the following courses: |
Major in Greek or LatinNine upper-division courses in the language of concentration and a capstone project (CLAS 198A & B). |
Major in Greek and LatinNine upper-division courses in the ancient languages, with at least six of these in a single language, and a capstone project (CLAS 198A & B). Students in these programs are strongly encouraged to fulfill the Western Culture requirement with CLAS 61/ENGL 11 and ENGL 12, 13 (Literature I, II, III). At least one course in Latin literature and one course in Greek literature are regularly offered each academic quarter. These courses are cycled in order to ensure majors the opportunity of studying the greatest number of major authors and genres without duplication during their program. |
