Rachel Knudsen

Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer

Rachel Ahern Knudsen earned an A.B. in Classics from Harvard University (2002), a Master of Studies (M.St.) in Greek and Latin Languages and Literature from Oxford University (2003), and a Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University (2009). She came to Santa Clara after spending three years as an Assistant Professor in the department of Classics and Letters at the University of Oklahoma. She has taught Greek and Latin language at all levels as well as a variety of classes on ancient literature in translation, and has supervised several undergraduate research theses. Her research interests include Homer, Archaic poetry, and ancient rhetoric; she is particularly interested in the representation of speech across all genres of ancient poetry and prose. She has published articles on the sophists' appreciation of poetic and mythical material, and on rhetorical argumentation in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes. Her book The Artificer of Discourse: Homeric Speech and the Origins of Rhetoric will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press in spring 2014.
