Helen E. Moritz is Associate Professor of Classics.  She received a Bachelor of Arts in Latin from Rosary College (now Dominican University), and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Classical Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago.  She teaches all levels of classical Greek language and literature, courses in Latin literature, a survey of classical literature in translation, courses in women in ancient Greece and ancient Rome, and classical tragedy and classical comedy.  She has published on Greek tragedy, comedy, and epic poetry, and on comparative drama.



Since coming to Santa Clara University in 1977 Dr. Moritz has served as Chair of the Classics Department (1978-1994, 1997-1998), Chair of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department (1990-1995), Dean of Academic Support Services and original Director of the Drahmann Advising and Learning Resources Center (1999-2002), and as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (2002-2005).

Dr. Moritz has also served as President of the California Classical Association/North and for ten years as editor of its journal Laetaberis.  Since 1990 she has been a member of the editorial board of Text and Presentation:  The Journal of the Comparative Drama Conference.  In 1995 she won both an award for Teaching Excellence from the American Philological Association and a Brutocao Award for Excellence in Curricular Innovation from Santa Clara University.  In the year 2000 she was the University’s Faculty Senate Professor.

Dr. Moritz lives in Santa Clara, California, with her husband David Caldwell.
