Santa Clara University High School Journalism Competition

The competition honors exceptional work by high school journalists covering news, features and sports.

Competition Rules
  • Deadline: May 10 2010
  • For stories completed August 1, 2009 — May 10, 2010
  • LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
Entry Requirements
  • Applicants must be full-time high school students during the 2009-2010 academic year.
  • One entry per person.
  • Stories should be written by one author; multiple bylines are not accepted.
  • Print entries must include the original tear sheets of the story, packaged as neatly as possible, plus two photocopies.
  • Online stories must include three copies of the story printed from the web and include the URL for the story on each copy.
  • A copy of the official entry form must be attached to all copies of the entry; the form may be photocopied.
  • Email entries with attachments are not accepted.
Awards
  • A 1st Place Award will be presented in each of the three categories: News, Features, and Sports.
  • At the discretion of the Review Committee, an honorable mention may be awarded.
  • The Review Committee reserves the right not to present an award.
Prizes

$50 will be awarded to each 1st Place Award winner.

High School Journalism Competition Review Committee

Stephen Buel is the owner and editor of the East Bay Express.

Chris Colin, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle website, freelances for The New York Times, Mother Jones, and Smithsonian. He's the author of "What Really Happened to the Class of '93."

Jack Gillum is the database editor at USA Today.

Will Harper is the managing editor of SF Weekly.

Barbara Kelley is a senior lecturer and director of the journalism emphasis in the Communication Department at Santa Clara University. She is also a freelance journalist who has written for the Christian Science Monitor, Health Magazine, Salon and other publications.

Andrew Leonard is a staff writer for Salon, where he produces the hybrid blog/column How the World Works. His work has also appeared in Wired, The New York Times Book Review, The Nation and Newsweek.

Stephen Rodrick is a contributing editor for New York Magazine. He also writes for the New York Times Magazine.

Amy Standen is a reporter for KQED's weekly science and environment radio program QUEST.

Traci Vogel is a freelance journalist who writes the visual arts column for SF Weekly. She is the former editor of Oakland's Urban View and the former associate editor at Seattle's The Stranger newspaper.

Kurt Wagner is the current editor of The Santa Clara, the student-run newspaper at Santa Clara University

Gordon Young is a lecturer in the Communication Department at Santa Clara University and a freelance journalist. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Slate Magazine, and Utne Read
