FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)How do I declare a communication major/minor? To declare a communication major or minor you must meet with the Department Chair. To make an appointment, drop by the department office, #229 in the Arts & Sciences Building, or call (408) 554-5498. What classes do I need to graduate? Please see the majors page; there is a list of courses needed for a communication degree at Santa Clara. How do I find out contact information for a communication department professor? Each quarter the department posts a list outside the department office indicating the office location, phone number, office hours, courses taught, and class time for each professor or lecturer teaching that quarter. If a course is full, how do I get on a waiting list? When a course is closed on e-campus, the deparment will post a waitlist in the Wailist binder, located in the Communication office, Arts & Sciecne Bldg, Room 229. This list is weigthed by class standing, delcared major and other academic factors. It is up to each professor's discretion as to how many, if any, additional students will be added from a wait list. Where do I get forms for changing my major, petitioning to graduate, etc? These forms are kept in the department office; they can also be picked up in Student Records. How can I get a copy of my Requirement Checklist?
If you have a professor you would like to have as an adviser, please check with him/her and ask if he/she would be willing to have you as an advisee. After you do that, stop by the office and fill out a Change of Adviser form and we will have the department chair sign it and send the form on to the Drahmann Advising Center for processing. How do I join the Communication Honor Society? Please go to the Communication Honor Society page to learn about membership requirements and the process for joining. The page appears under "Students" in the menu to the left. How do I petition to graduate? Pick up a Petition to Graduate form from the department office or the Student Records office. Drop this off in the communication department office. Office staff will prepare a Pre-Graduation Evaluation, have it signed by the Department Chair, and notify you to pick it up and take it to Student Records. Petitions are due by What are the prerequisites for the upper division classes? For some upper division Comm classes, there are prerequisites; to find out the prerequisite class, please see the course descriptions. Do any Communication courses fulfill Core Curriculum requirements? Yes, there are a number of communication courses that fulfill Core Curriculum requirements. Please see the Communication Core courses page for more information. You will find the page under Academics in the menu to the left. Does the communication department offer internships? Not only does the communication department encourage internships for our majors, but we also have an Internship Coordinator. The mail box cabinet in the department office has a bin labeled "Student Pick-Up." This is where you will find items that an instructor or the department office has indicated that you should pick up.
